There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, in Parklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. John B. Morris officiating. on July 16, 2000.4

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Lovell Allport, a longtime mine foreman for Carbon Fuel Coal Company, Winifrede. Born July 25, 1917, at Eskdale on Cabin Creek, Mary Ella was the fourth of five children of the late James and Maude Alexander Scott. She attended East Bank High School and Concord College where she graduated with a degree in elementary education. She married Jimmy in 1943. The first of their five children was born in 1944 at Nuttalburg, a coal-mining town at the bottom of the New River Gorge. After living at Laing and Winifrede in Kanawha County, they moved to Belle where they lived for 27 years. A beloved and respected teacher, Mary taught in Kanawha County schools for 30 years. For 27 years, she was at Belle Elementary where she taught the second, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Mary firmly believed that there wasn't a child that couldn't learn. Retiring in 1977, she and Jimmy moved to Fayetteville, near his childhood home. After his death in 1983, Mary became a world traveler, visiting every continent except Africa and Antarctica. Always up for an adventure, she landed in a small plane on a glacier in New Zealand, rafted the New River on her 70th birthday and, at 79, cruised the Chesapeake Bay for a week on a small sailboat. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Lee and Joe; and her older sister, Margaret. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Mary Katherine and Michael Eltzroth of White Sulphur Springs; three sons and their wives, Scott and Sandi of Fayetteville, Robert and Dianne of Belle and Richard and Brandy of Jacksonville, Fla; four grandchildren, Clayton Allport, Emily Eltzroth, Jimmy Allport and Kenny Eltzroth; a sister, Agnes Wilson of Vesta, Va; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends and caregivers, Carolyn Withrow, Dottie Light and Lois Thomas; and her pal, Bingo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

Mrs. Wilson will be sorely missed by her children, Mary Margaret Sullivan and husband Mike Sullivan, daughter, Patricia, son, John, and wife Robin; Arnold Wilson, son, J.R. and wife Barbara Luvas Wilson, daughter, Jennifer Wilson Frisch, and son, Joe; 12 beloved grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Agnes grew up and spent most of her life as a homemaker and mother in Miami on Cabin Creek. She and her husband Jack moved to Vesta, Va., after his retirement, and enjoyed many years there. The family will have a private memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, at Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, Va. on February 21, 2011.3

Dead were Robert Lee Duffie, 28, and Curtis Eugene Hopkins, 20, both of Eskdale. They were employees of Wyatt Coal Co. State police said they apparently were thrown from the car after it struck the culvert. They were killed instantly, officers added. State Police Cpl. Sam Whitman and Trooper S. E. Tribett investigated. Duffie is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Duffie of Eskdale, five sisters, Mrs. Betty Slack of Decota and Mrs. Ruth Short, Miss Mary Lou Duffie, Miss Patricia Hope Duffie and Miss Charlene Duffie, all of Eskdale, and two brothers, Joe and Ray, both of Eskdale. Surviving Hopkins are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Hopkins of Eskdale, two brothers, Ray and Jack, a sister, Miss Judy Hopkins, all of Eskdale, the grandmothers, Mrs. Annie Carroll of Dayton, O., and Mrs. Mary Cochran of Nitro, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Sally Haywood of Dry Branch. The bodies are at Pryor Mortuary. Joint service for the two will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Eskdale Christian Church with Rev. J. Hanna officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park at London. The bodies will be take to the church one hour before time of service. on January 15, 1951.4

     Mary Ester Bowling was buried at Montgomery Memorial Park, Route 60, London, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.3 She Mary Esther Duffie, (September 9, 1920 - January 7, 2012), 91, a 60 year resident of Eskdale, passed from this earth on January 7, 2012 at the home of her niece and caregiver, Marlene Perry, of Scott Depot after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in 1920 in Kanawha City, the fourth child of the late David and Lula Bowling and moved to Ohley in 1929. Mary was a 1939 graduate of East Bank High, played the bass drum at Leewood Junior High, while another band student carried it for her on his back, as she was too small to carry it. Mary was the owner and operator of Mary's Beauty Shop at Decota for many years, giving it up to spend more time with her beloved husband when he retired and his health was failing. She was a very loving person and always a helping hand. She enjoyed gardening, caning, tending her flowers, loved to joke, play jokes on you and dearly loved to dance. Mary was always a joy to be around, she loved life and her family dearly. She will be greatly missed. Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Joseph Duffie, her sisters, Sylvia Scherer, Elsie West, Ella Louise Cain, Ruth Ferrell and a brother, Everett Bowling. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved son, David Michael Duffie and his wife, Pat Kelly Duffie, of Charleston; brother Franklin D. Bowling and his wife, Ket, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Lore of Ravenswood, Charlene Butler of Williamsburg, Virginia and Hope Jefferies of Michigan; brothers-in-law, Bob Cain of Jenison, Michigan and Jess Ferrell of Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Jeffery Holmes and his nurse Aileen of Dunbar medical and Brenda Gray of Ohley.
