Forest was drafted into the US Army and was shipped to Australia-New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Bougainville. During a 30-day furlough in 1944 Forest married Christine Podmarsky from Chicago, IL. In Dec. of 1944 he was shipped back to Leyte, Southern Philippines. Forest served in three campaigns in the 221st Field Artillery Battalion Service Battery “Americal Division” with the rank of Master Sgt, where he was in charge of all the vehicle maintenance. He served in the war 42 months and was in the Army for four years and 13 months. After he was discharged, Forest ran Laughlin Excavating Co. for 46 years. He loved his work and the people he worked for. In June of 1965 he married Maxine Atteberry from Paola, KS. On July 31, 1993 Forest married Dorothy French from Overland Park, KS. Forest was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Olathe, the Wellsville Baptist Church and the Olathe Trail Riders. He enjoyed playing the guitar, loved dancing and riding horses. He will be missed by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Christine, in 1964; second wife, Maxine, in 1992 and siblings: Frank, Leon and Delbert Laughlin. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; daughter, Jeanne (Laird) Konker, Denver, CO; step-children: Ricky French, Overland Park, KS, Robin Smith, Leavenworth, KS, Randy French, KCMO, Shirley Fort, Wellsville, KS, Ron Atteberry, Topeka, KS, Dennis Atteberry, Belton, MO, Max Atteberry, Ottawa, KS and Don Atteberry, Shawnee, KS; two grandchildren, Laura and John; many step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many great-step-grandchildren. Burial at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Overland Park. on September 25, 2014.⁴

She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Smith and Birdie Wiley Smith; sisters, Florence Meador and Norma Landis; brothers, Glenn Smith and Ralph Smith. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Delbert B. Laughlin; daughter, Joan Laughlin; son, Gary and wife Therese Laughlin; son, Steve and wife Mary Beth Laughlin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #6 since 1954, a member of the Shriners and the former fire chief of the Stanley, Missouri, Fire Department. He is survived by one daughter, Pat Mock and her husband, Ed, of Laurie, Mo; one granddaughter, Katrina Couey and her husband, Micky; two great-grandsons, Bryan Couey and Christopher Couey, all of Milledgeville, Ga; one brother, Marion J. Laughlin and his wife, Julia, of Belton, Mo; one sister, Bonnie Worley and her husband, Francis, of Lawrence, Kan; six nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. Mrs. Worley died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Olathe Good Samaritan Center in Olathe. She was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Stanley, the daughter of Jesse and Cora Feltenberger Laughlin. Mrs. Worley had been a Lawrence resident since 1956. She worked as a cook at Sigma Chi and Lambda Chi Fraternities and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at Kansas University and was previously a waitress at local restaurants. Mrs. Worley was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Lawrence and the Postal Auxiliary. She married Francis Raymond Worley on Sept. 2, 1942, in Harrisonville, Mo. He preceded her in death Oct. 20, 2010. She was also preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Survivors include four sons, Gary Francis and wife Rita, Monticello, Ark., David Ward and wife Maria, Lawrence, Dennis Raymond and wife Mary, Gardner, and Craig Alan, Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
