A coal miner, he was employed he was employed by the Alta Coal Co. of Beckley. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local No. 8932. A resident of Shady Spring for the past 22 years, he was a member of the MacArthur Church of God. Born at Spanishburg Nov. 8, 1916, he was the son of Mrs. Eliza Jane Dickerson Duncan, who survives him in Stanton, Va., and the late James Thomas Duncan. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Mrs. Mary Duncan of Shady Spring; four daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Betty Jane) McNulty of Beckley, Mrs. David (Shirley Ann) Arthur of Alexandria, Va., and Miss Helen Louise Duncan of Shady Spring (only three daughters were listed); two brothers, Leonard Duncan of Newbern, Va., and Thurman Duncan of Shady Spring; a half brother, Pierce Duncan of Shady Spring; one sister, Mrs. Elbert (Bessie) Dick of Sandstone; a half sister, Mrs. J. W. (Evie) Manning of Marfrance; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James Helmontoller, Claude Stump, R. C. Huffman, WE. H. Brown, Ross Kiblinger, and Mack Norris. The body will be removed from the Webb and Neal Funeral Home to the church one hour prior to the services. on December 17, 1962.3

He was prerecorded in death by two sisters, Lucy Ballengee and Elsie Morgan, and three brothers, Isaac, Robert and Gordon Buckland. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary Willis Buckland; a son, Ross Wayne Buckland and his wife, Laura, of Beckley; five daughters, Mrs. Russ (Mary Jane) Soucy of Horseheads, N.Y., Mrs. Allan (Nancy) Ward of Coral Springs, Fla., Mrs George (Linda) Schuster of Rockledge, Fla., Debra Rutherford of Lanark and Wendy Buckland of Winston-Salem, N.C; five grandchildren, Chris and Robert Buckland, Jennifer Rutherford, Kathryn Soucy and Chad Ward, and two sisters, Ada Spencer of Garland, Tx., and Marie Pack of Bells, Tx. Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and the body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services. on May 24, 1977.2

He will be sadly missed. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Pineview Cemetery at Orgas, with the Rev. Danny Gilfilen officiating. Special thanks to the staff of the Bowers Hospice House for their loving care in his last few days. Arrangements are made through Valley Funeral Home, Whitesville. on August 31, 2008.1
