Dr. Glesinger, Wife Find Christmas Happiness In America. Just being alive in America compensates any lack of Christmas pleasures for Dr. Arthur Glesinger, once an established Vienna specialist. "We do not expect anything, isn't it enough that we are in America?" chorused his comely blonde wife, Gertrude, who was a concert singer and music teacher in Europe before the couple fled Austria in 1938. They came to Charleston two months ago to be with a cousin, Mrs. Nannie Schaffer (the Glesingers were sponsored by my grandfather, Dr. Phillip Schaffer, a cousin of Gertrude), 1528 Lee street, after living with friends in Italy. Glesinger, a Jew, said he took with him from Vienna the equivalent of $10 in German marks, a few clothes and his furniture, leaving behind his home, his 12-year-medical practice and his wife’s career. Dr. Glesinger temporarily is a masseur. “Our people are still in Germany and Czecho-slovakia.” said Mrs. Glesinger. “We do not hear from them since the war. But let’s not speak of that. You in America just cannot appreciate what it is like in Europe. “Next Christmas maybe we will have gifts for all our friends.” on December 24, 1939.6 He died on October 30, 1963 at New York at age 65.2
