She married her high school sweetheart James Allen Wharton in 1949, remaining by his side until his death in 2012. In addition to raising three children, Charlotte’s career included teaching high school in South Carolina and Germany in the 1950s; serving as a community leader and volunteer in Austin, Texas in the 1960s; working as a counselor and test-anxiety specialist at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1970s, and as a professor of English as a second language at the University of Houston in the 1970s and ‘80s. She was also active in her faith, including serving as an elder at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas in the 1970s and ‘80s. She was an accomplished pianist, loved her dogs, and was a dedicated supporter of human rights and environmental causes. She and her husband moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina from Dallas, Texas upon Dr. Wharton’s retirement in 1997. They had first come to know Western North Carolina in the early 1950s when they spent two years living and working in Greenville, South Carolina. Charlotte loved the constantly changing landscapes and weather, and delighted in her friends, gardening, regional art and culture, and travel. In addition to her sons Robert of Black Mountain, James of El Paso, Texas, and Bruce of Asheville, Charlotte Wharton is survived by daughters-in-law Julia and Katherine, and her five grandchildren, Taylor and Sydney Wharton of Texas, Turner and Sam Wharton of Virginia, and Sarah Wharton of New York, NY. on April 5, 2019.6

Robert Gordon Mickey Robert Gordon Mickey, 83, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2014, in Austin. A lifelong Austin resident, Robert was born September 11, 1930, to Samuel Waite Mickey and India Smith Mickey. He graduated from Austin High School and the University of Texas, where he studied mathematics and was a proud President of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and member of the Silver Spurs. He then served three years in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant on a destroyer during the Korean War. He married Anita Voelkel, of Austin, in 1962, and they had two children, Elizabeth and Robert. Upon leaving the Navy, Robert worked with the American Cancer Society. From there, he joined the Texas Medical Association, where he had a distinguished twenty-nine year career and retired as the organization's Executive Vice President. He made many lifelong friends from across the state through his service with TMA. Robert was fond of the Texas coast and especially Port Aransas, where he and Anita enjoyed a vacation home for many years with their children and grandchildren. Fishing off the pier at Channel View was a favorite pastime and source of many happy memories for his family. Robert is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anita; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Greg Lisso, of Boise, Idaho; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jennifer Traig, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; his grandchildren, Alex and Sarah Lisso and Rachel and Samuel Mickey; and his sister, Charlotte Wharton, of Black Mountain, North Carolina. The family would like to thank Hospice Austin for their care in recent weeks.5 He was born on September 11, 1930 at Austin, Travis Co., Texas.2,3,5 He married Anita Lee Voelkel on February 17, 1962 at Travis Co., Texas.4,5 Robert Gordon Mickey died on June 8, 2014 at Austin, Travis Co., Texas, at age 83.5

Heflin, age 73, of Reynoldsburg died on December 15, 2015 at her residence. Born on July 8, 1942 to the late Paul R. & Lillian N. (Hemmings) Combow of Belle, WV. A 1960 graduate of Dupont High School, she had a passion for gardening and enjoyed her time at flea markets. Bonnie also was part owner of the Veteran's Corner. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Charles; children, Mendy Stoecklin, Tommy Heflin, Shannon Bastian, Brent Heflin; grandchildren, Allen Rowland, Emma Bastian; brother, Sam Combow; brother and sister in laws, Billy (Kate) Heflin, Barbara (Douglas) Johnson; special cousins, Jane (Buddy) Wilkinson, Jean Lambert; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bonnie would also like to give thanks to her special friends, Sugie Risk, Connie McCutcheon, Joyce "Joy Dean" Sweeney, Jean "Mo" Eads, Sara Scites, Connie Heiberger, Shirley Lowe. Interment will follow at Lithopolis Cemetery. on December 16, 2015.4
