Nelma Ruth Pittman was buried at Canaday Cemetery, Glen White, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2 She was born on June 4, 1931 at Glen View, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,2 As of October 14, 1947,her married name was Thompson.1 She married Edgar Lewis Thompson on October 14, 1947 at Sophia, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1 Nelma Ruth Pittman died on June 2, 1949 at Glen White, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 17.2 She Police today gave jealousy the motive in the slaying of an 18-year-old Glen View woman and the suicide of her 42-year-old husband. Edgar Louis Thompson, of Glen White, killed estranged wife, Nelma Thompson, of Glen View, shortly after noon yesterday then committed suicide by turning the gun on himself. Thompson, who shot his wife through mouth, lived about 40 minutes after pumped bullets through his heart with 38 caliber Smith and Wesson. Mrs. Thompson died almost instantly. Beckley State Police said home the shooting occurred near the home of Mrs. Thompson's parents in Glen View. The Thompsons, were married in October of 1947 and had separated about three weeks ago, State Police said. They had no children. They quoted eyewitnesses as saying that Thompson also fired once at his mother-in-law, Mrs. Dewey Cochran, but the bullet missed its mark. State troopers gave this version of the killings: Mrs. Thompson left her mother's house with three other Cochran children shortly after noon. They walked over to a large tree next to their home and were burning a mattress there when Thompson arrived on the scene. As Thompson approached his wife he pulled a gun from his shirt and shot her once in the mouth, the bullet going through the back of her head after knocking out two teeth. The children scattered for safety and Thompson fired after them wildly. All of them escaped unharmed. At this point Thompson's mother-in-law, who was standing in the doorway of her home, attracted his attention. One shot aimed at her went amiss. Thompson then turned the gun on himself. He pulled the trigger twice while the muzzle of the pistol rested against the left side of his chest. According eyewitnesses, Thompson succeeded in dragging himself back to his house a distance of one hundred yards from Cochran home. Troopers said Thompson was found lying on the grass near his front porch when they were summoned by a neighbor at 12:45 p. m. One officer related that Thompson tried to speak but his words were unintelligible. Thompson was employed at the Rucker Service Station on Neville Street. Mrs. Thompson was the daughter of Timothy Pittman and Mrs. Polly Cochran. Her stepfather is Dewey Cochran. on June 3, 1949.4
