     Leo Allen Yates Sr. was buried at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee.3,4 He Leo A. Yates, Sr., 90, a four year resident of Hanover, died on October 3, 2019 at his residence. He was born on July 18, 1929 in Floyd, VA to the late Abner and Lila Yates. Mr. Yates graduated from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, VA where he played football and baseball and was MVP for basketball. Because of his accomplishments, he is mentioned at the Deaf History Museum in Staunton. Mr. Yates lived in Roanoke, VA until 1960 when he moved to Upper Marlboro, MD where he lived until 1978. From 1978 until 2002 he lived in Bowie, MD and Fredericksburg from 2002 until 2015. Mr. Yates was employed by the Washington Star Newspaper as a printer from 1960 until 1982. In 1984 he began his employment with the Department of Labor where he retired from in 1998. Mr. Yates served as Treasurer for the Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf. He achieved Eagle Scout in high school and in his adult life was the Assistant Scout Master for Troop #1249 in Bowie where he was heavily involved in fundraising, particularly the sale of Christmas wreaths. Mr. Yates also organized and volunteered at the Deaf Camp at West River. In addition to his parents, Mr. Yates is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty C. Yates, his brothers Garland, Roffee, Dock, and William Yates and his sister Nancy Nelson. He is survived by his twin children Leo A. Yates, Jr. and Sarah L. Yates, his brothers Lester and Jack Yates, and his many nephews, nieces, and his extended family. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville.4 He married Betty Cooper.12,3 Leo Allen Yates Sr. was born on July 18, 1929 at Floyd Co., Virginia.2,4 He died on October 3, 2019 at York Co., Pennsylvania, at age 90.4

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Warren Lawless; a sister, Marcella Hagy; and a brother, James Malcolm Whitlock. She graduated from Fieldale High School in 1943. She retired from the city of Martinsville in 1986 after 30 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville and the Philathea Sunday School Class. Surviving are a son, Michael Warren Lawless of Huntsville; one sister, Mary Thompson of Martinsville; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Collins Funeral Services chapel with Dr. Calvin Rains officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. He was a member of the Shrine Temple, Moneta Lodge, 284 Moose Lodge, and the American Legion. He was also a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He had such a kind heart and was such a humble man, he inspired everyone he met. He enjoyed his family and many friends, loved going to the lake and to Florida in the winters. He will be sadly missed by all who had ever known him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine P. Richards. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Betty K. Richards; son, Gary Richards and wife, Kim; daughter, Connie Richards Cyckowski; grandchildren, Alicia Jones and Brandon Johnson; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Kyle Jones; stepchildren, Jim and Patti Tribley, and Michael Byrd; step granddaughter, Samantha Murphy; and brothers, Irvin and Elizabeth Richards, and Robert and Shirley Richards. Special thanks to Dr. Green and all of the staff of Lewis Gale Hospital for taking such wonderful care of him and for being so kind to all of us. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. on May 2, 2009.8

The family settled in Roanoke where they opened their first business W & H Confectionery which later became Layman Candy Company. Juanita graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in 1951, soon married and had three daughters. At the age of 29, she joined her parents at Layman Candy Company and grew the business while raising her children on her own. Juanita became President of the company in 1963 and took the business to greater heights, growing the local shop to a multi-state operation, now known as Layman Distributing. Juanita remained President of Layman Distributing for 55 years and served as Chairwoman of the Board until her death. Juanita was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a pillar of the Roanoke, Salem community and one of the leading female business owners in the area, being named to the WorkingWoman magazine's Top 500 business women in the US. She devoted her life to Layman Distributing and left a growing legacy that has continued for four generations. Even though Juanita enjoyed much success in her career, her true joys were her children. Known by her family as Momma, Mumu, and G-G, she tirelessly loved, nurtured and supported each of them. Juanita was smart, honest and fair; a straight shooter both in her business career and personal life. She was appreciated for her sage advice and wisdom that she would provide just when her family, employees, and customers needed it most. She is preceded in death by her loving mother Weda Ruth Sweeney Layman, dedicated father William Demetrius Layman, and infant brother Robert Carlton Layman. She is survived by her children Judy (Mickey) Ross, Janet (Harry) Surratt, and Jerri Jacobs (Fred); grandchildren Scott (Samantha) Thomasson, Justin (Hannah) Keen, Jordan (Bridget Brydges) Keen, Harrison (Jackie Travis) Surratt, Elizabeth (Michael) Holt, Hollyn (Justin) Brown, and Sarah (Graham Pratt) Surratt; great grandchildren Sydney Kate, Jackson, Sawyer, Grace, Julia, Ophelia, Gunner, Seraphine, and Asher. on March 6, 2024.7
