A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he cherished family gatherings. Always health conscious, he continued daily exercises and healthy eating all of his life. An avid gardener, he shared vegetables and fruits with family and friends. A voracious reader, he enjoyed discussing politics, world events, and history. However, it was his sense of humor and excellent memory that made him a master storyteller of family history and favorite jokes. He entertained his family and friends with events of his childhood during the depression, his tours of duty in the army, life as a Game Warden, and humorous insights into life. During his last years at his home and at the Richfield Assisted Living Center, he showed us all how to live with laughter and acceptance. Fiercely independent, he approached his tasks with a positive attitude.The family is grateful to his special, favorite caregivers who helped us keep him comfortable and smiling, Angie, Monica, Trina and Casey. A lifelong resident of Roanoke County, she entered the Lewis Gale School of Nursing upon graduation from high school in 1942. She became a Registered Nurse in 1945 and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps where she proudly served in the United States and in Germany for 18 months. With the military drawdown after World War II, she was honorably discharged and returned to civilian life where she served as a nurse at Gill Memorial Hospital for a short time before devoting 29 years as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem before her retirement from nursing in 1977. In 1949, she married Robert (Bob) Musser who was an inspector at Norfolk Western Railroad. After Bob's death at a young age in 1961, Eura continued her work at the VA Hospital where she met and later married Dr Waddie P. (Jack) Jackson; however, Jack died in 1969. In 1977, Eura retired from her work at the VA Medical Center and married Edwin (Clyde) Banner with whom she spent 26 happy years traveling all over the world. Eura was an active member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church while she was able to attend. She was preceded in death by her parents, Terry and Ima West; her three wonderful husbands, Robert Musser, Dr. Waddie Jackson, and Clyde Banner; her brother, Terry West; her sister-in-law, Esther West; her brother-in-law, Jimmy Turner; her stepdaughter-in-law, Meng Banner; and her nephew, Jamie Turner. She was dearly loved by her family, leaving three brothers, John West, Richard West and his wife, Bobbie, and Franklin West and his wife, Virginia; her sister, Mary Alice Turner; stepsons, Edwin Clyde Banner III and James Matthew Banner and his wife, Linda; stepdaughter, Sherry Banner; and stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Barry and her husband, Andy, to mourn her passing.      Mary Alice West Mary Alice West Turner, 98, of Salem, Virginia, peacefully entered eternal rest on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. Mary Alice was born July 6, 1926. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary Alice lived her life as a very loving, caring and giving person. She was a believer in Jesus Christ and encouraged her family to live a Godly life. Her devotion to her husband, Jimmie, was unwavering. Always an encouragement to him, Mary Alice served as his trusted advisor throughout his insurance career and was his compassionate caregiver through many health issues as his faithful wife. She nurtured and supported her sons, Jamie and Steven, from the time they were children and into adulthood. Mary Alice enjoyed spending time with grandsons, James and Christopher, at their home in Salem, Va., playing cards and games. She especially enjoyed time with her brothers, Frank, Richard and John, and sister Eura at the homeplace in Floyd County, affectionately called “Westwood.” Dear friends, Sharon and Randy Vinson were neighbors who became special friends for years and were like family to Mary Alice. Sharon and Mary Alice would have the time of their lives when shopping together! Mary Alice was a graduate of Check High School, Class of 1942, where she was a star basketball player and won a medal for Most Outstanding Player. She was also a graduate of Lewis Gale School of Nursing, R.N., and the University of Virginia, Class of 1947. Mary Alice was a registered nurse at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem from 1947 through 1956. She was a devout Christian and very active in her church, Central United Methodist Church in Salem, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She lived for God and inspired her family to do the same, ultimately leading to the salvation of Steven as a young adult. Mary Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Terry and Ima West; her beloved husband of 58 years, James “Jimmie” William Turner; son, James “Jamie” West Turner; brothers, Terry, John, Frank and Richard West; sister, Eura West Banner as well as several uncles and sisters in law. Mary Alice is survived by her son, Steven Turner and his wife, Marycatherine; grandchildren, Christopher Turner and his wife, Erica, and James Turner and his mother, Helen; great grandson, Jacob Turner; step-grandson, Carter Cecil; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and nieces and nephews in law. Dick is survived by his sister, Mary Alice Turner; sons, Rick and Tony West; daughter, Julie West Hammond (Robby); grandchildren, Terry West (Delaney), Rachel West, Alexis West, Weston Hammond, Bella Hammond, and McKenzie West; great grandchild, Terry Samuel West II; and a host of numerous nephews and nieces. Dick was an Air Force Veteran, graduate of Carson-Newman College, and bank officer with Oneida Bank & Trust. In 1963, he and his family relocated to establish a successful ServiceMaster Franchise in Chattanooga. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chattanooga and the Oneida Jaycees and Lions Club. Dick lived a full and extraordinary life and loved his family. He loved being outdoors, traveling, playing doubles in tennis with his wife, and dancing (both country-line and tap). He impressed upon people to laugh, enjoyed telling jokes, and seeing people enjoy life. We would like to thank Hearth Hospice and his caregivers for their faithful service on his journey. Walter was a talented gardener. Both friends and family enjoyed Walter's gift for gardening.
