He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic Lodge, and the VFW.Following his retirement, he and Esther moved to Roanoke to be nearer to family. A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he cherished family gatherings. Always health conscious, he continued daily exercises and healthy eating all of his life. An avid gardener, he shared vegetables and fruits with family and friends. A voracious reader, he enjoyed discussing politics, world events, and history. However, it was his sense of humor and excellent memory that made him a master storyteller of family history and favorite jokes. He entertained his family and friends with events of his childhood during the depression, his tours of duty in the army, life as a Game Warden, and humorous insights into life. During his last years at his home and at the Richfield Assisted Living Center, he showed us all how to live with laughter and acceptance. Fiercely independent, he approached his tasks with a positive attitude. The family is grateful to his special, favorite caregivers who helped us keep him comfortable and smiling, Angie, Monica, Trina and Casey.
