He taught business courses at the University of Virginia, American University and Northern Virginia Community College. He was a graduate in his native Lynchburg of Virginia Commercial College, now Miller-Motte Technical College. He later received master's and doctoral degrees in business administration from the University of California at Davis. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II and was recalled to duty during the Korean War. He retired as a commander in the Naval Reserve in 1972. He began his career in Lynchburg as a purchasing agent with Trailways Bus Co. and transferred to Washington in 1960. He later worked for J.B. Kendall Steel Co. and was vice president of Macke Co. Dr. Hedrick's publications included a book, "Purchasing Management in the Smaller Company," that won an industry award and was translated into several languages. He also wrote for the Small Business Administration and contributed to other industry books. He also helped develop testing for national certification of purchasing managers. He was a member of the Purchasing Council of the American Management Association and was inducted into the association's "Wall of Fame." He was vice president of the National Association of Purchasing Management, which gave him its highest honor, and president of the Purchasing Management Association of Washington. Dr. Hedrick was a member of McLean Bible Church and a volunteer at the Providence Recreation Center in Falls Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Rachel Hedrick of Annandale; two daughters, Susan Hedrick Duclos of Nokesville and Alice Hedrick Cole of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; a sister; and two brothers. on July 11, 2003.12

He was the loving husband of Janis Morris Hedrick for 57 years. Born July 24, 1933 in Lynchburg he was a son of the late Silas D. Hedrick and Alice Maude Stowe Hedrick. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Gabriel Meeks, two brothers, Floyd D. Hedrick and James Hedrick and a sister, Helen H. Williams. John was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He served his country in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and was retired from Greater Lynchburg Transit Company with 41 years of service and Lynchburg Wholesale Florist with 12 years of service. He was a past member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and a present member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and working in his yard. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife he leaves to cherish his memory four children, Brenda H. Meeks and husband, Phillip and J. Michael Hedrick and wife, Sharon all of Lynchburg, Moose Hedrick and wife, Angela of Brookneal and Timothy W. Hedrick of Hurt; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Meeks and wife, Connie of Louisa, Justin Meeks and wife, Michelle of Concord, R. Michael Hedrick and wife, Lindsey, and Chris Hedrick of Lynchburg, Brandon Hedrick of Appomattox, Crystal Hedrick and Chase Hedrick of Brookneal; five great grandchildren, Bryson Meeks and Braylee Meeks of Louisa, Weston Hedrick, Mason Hedrick, and Addie Hedrick of Lynchburg; a brother, S. David Hedrick and wife, Helen of Richmond; and many other relatives and friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Rev. Shelby Royal and Rev. David Heerspink for their faithfulness in visiting with John at his home and in the hospital and Dr. Dwight Oldham and his staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and Centra Hospice and his nurse, Alice Powell, LGH Radiology staff especially his "angels", Wilma, Twanisha, and Tonya for all of their loving care and support. He was a member of Derbyshire Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and financial secretary, usher and a member of the Chancel and Golden Tones choirs. He also has served as a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital for 11 years. A graveside service will be held at Westhampton Memorial and Cremation Park, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond. on March 27, 2018.3

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50-plus years, Helen “Mimi” Williams; parents, Fitzhugh L. and Viola Mae Williams; granddaughter, Cassie Williams; and eight siblings. He is survived by his children, Marsha (Floyd), Cindy, Jack Jr. (Erin), Dave (Karen) and Kelley (Jen); grandchildren, Jason, Helene, Marisha, Kyle, Daniel, Hunter, Logan, Alex and Whit; and great-grandchildren, Parker and Aiden. He was born and raised in Lynchburg, Va. After high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He went on to work for C&P Telephone for over 35 years; he was very proud to be a pioneer working with fiber optics. He volunteered as a Scout leader and was an avid gardener and mean cook. He was known for his ability to fix anything. He was dearly loved and will be missed.
