Fox, 74 , fixture in Point Loma business, social circles. If there were a "Mr. Point Loma" award, longtime resident Stewart R. Fox surely would have deserved the honor. So say his friends, who described Mr. Fox as a fine businessman, a quiet doer of good deeds and an avid golfer forever hoping for the perfect game. He did not seek accolades, and friends often found out from one another just how generous he was, contributing to the San Diego Hall of Champions, the Reuben H. "He played offense and defense; it went both ways in those days when you were good," said Lyle Butler, his friend since the two met in third grade. Malin Burnham, chairman of the Burnham Cos., met Mr. Fox in high school when they both played football. "He was that person that we all had fun with, the best-humored person you could possibly imagine," Burnham said. After graduating from high school in 1944, Mr. Fox enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served two years in New Guinea. He came back to enroll at State Teachers College (now San Diego State University), majoring in business and joining the Phi Lambda Xi and Sigma Chi fraternities. Mr. Fox bought a hardware store on Rosecrans Street north of Canon Street in 1950, the year he graduated from college. Now known as the Village Store, it became a Point Loma landmark, sort of a mini-Home Depot with gas pumps out front. The store also was a gathering place for friends until he sold the business in the early 1970s. "Everybody knew him," said Gordon Luce, former chairman of Great American Bank. "He had this wonderful store. Everybody just loved Stewart Fox. He would be called 'Mr. Point Loma' if there was such a thing." Mr. Fox began a second career, working for Butler Real Estate, now a division of Coldwell Banker, until he retired in 1989. He and his wife, Charlene, belonged to a monthly potluck group that, on his initiative, donated money for charitable causes, said Yvonne Larsen, a former president of the California Board of Education. "Stewart was a friend I acquired when I married my husband (Dan Larsen)," Larsen said. "When I entered politics for a school board election, he was my treasurer because everyone knew Stewart was honest." Mr. Fox formed FBL Enterprises with his friends Butler and Dan Larsen, also a grade-school chum and a former San Diego port commissioner, on a handshake and the motto "Our word is our bond." The company principals owned a shopping center in Chula Vista until several years ago. Active in many organizations, Mr. Fox was a member of, among others, the Point Loma Rotary Club, San Diego Country Club, San Diego Yacht Club and R and A Club, a gentlemen's social club and a long-standing San Diego tradition. He had belonged to Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church since 1944. Mr. Fox loved golf and would play as often as three times a week. About 30 years ago, one of his friends surprised him with a golf tournament he called The Fox Invitational. "Probably 60 of us showed up," said another friend, Bruce Moore. "He was stunned. We had it every year and played all over." Mr. Fox is survived by his wife, Charlene; two sons, Stephen and Tom, both of San Diego; a daughter, Anne Groepper of Temecula; a stepson, Robert Riedl of Pacific Palisades; a stepdaughter, Jan Davis of Tualatin, Ore; and 10 grandchildren. Interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. on June 2, 2000.1
