Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 21, 1 p.m., from the Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Ned W. Crumpacker and Dr. Allen D. Pugh officiating. Christine Jeanette Light died on August 20, 2018 at Virginia at age 96.1 She Christine Jeanette Light Vest went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 20, 2018. She was 96 years young. A resident of Check her whole life, Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Lee Vest, whom she married in 1946; parents Prof. Brownlow and Ardella Prillaman Light; brothers, Harris Hart, Julian Nelson, Irving Binford and Ralph Emerson Light; sisters, Corinne Martha Light McNeil and Evelyn Light Shank. She is survived by sons, Robert Irving (Kathy), Roger Lee, Daniel Brown (Kirsten) Vest; grandchildren, Robert Irving Jr. (Melinda), James Lee (Kristy), Paul Alfred (Scarlett), Ian Edward (fiancé Olivia Goodson), Ragan Christine Vest; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Eli and Ava Leigh Vest; nieces and nephews, Lois McNeil Basham, Louise McNeil Shank, Maynard McNeil, Sadie Shank Benn, David Shank and Leslie Light Burton as well as many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Christine loved life on the farm and spent countless hours walking the hills checking on her cows, tending to her huge gardens, canning the bounty from those gardens, enjoying the beautiful flowers she and Roger planted around the house, and watching the hummingbirds and occasional orioles that came because of the flowers. She took great pleasure in cooking and especially loved making fried apple pies for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment to follow at the Wilson Cemetery in Check. The family would especially like to thank Carilion Clinic Hospice and Home Health for their tender care of Christine and help to our family during the past week. on August 23, 2018.1

Grathel is survived by her son, Jack Sheppard and his wife, Ruby of Newport News; her daughter, Pat Ambrose and her husband, Bob of Yorktown; three grandchildren, Jeff Sheppard of Martinsburg, W.Va., Tracy and Lee McVetta of Matthews, N.C., Bobbie and Bo Hurley of Greenville, S.C; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. A celebration of Grathel's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Yorktown Rd., Yorktown, VA 23693; or the Hampton Baptist Church Building Fund, 40 King's Way, Hampton, VA 23669. on October 4, 2011.3

He had been in ill health for about a year. A native of West Virginia, he had lived in Hampton for 23 years before his recent move to York County. He was an electrical contractor and a member of Hampton Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grathel Sheppard; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Sheppard of Shawville; a daughter, Mrs. Robert W. Ambrose of Hampton; a son, James J. Sheppard of York County; two sisters, Mrs. Ford Sisson of Shawville and Mrs. Bill Lounsdale of Missouri; two brothers, Other Sheppard of Buena Vista and Rex Sheppard of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; and one grandchild. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Raymond Powell, George Viertel, Robert Lanahan, Ed Nulty, Sterling Dowden, Donald Adams, Leon ard Hurt and T. W. E. Hankinson. The Laymen's Sunday School class of Hampton Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. on June 13, 1965.6
