He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Lillian Starkey Helm; son and daughter-in-law, Monroe (Jay) and Susan Helm, Salem; two daughters and son-in-law, Shelby Bowles, Cindy and Gary Hale, all of Elliston; four grandchildren, Jason and Eric Helm, Lindsey Hale and Zachary Bowles; one sister, Earnestine Epperly, Salem; numerous loving nieces, nephews, and friends, and a very special and devoted friend, Charles Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at the Elliston Church of God, Elliston, Va., with the Rev. Ronald King officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, with Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends Monday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel.
