His Social Security Number was 466-54-6996.5 Fred Lee "Freddy" Poff was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas.6,7 He A dedicated soldier and airman, he earned many commendations from senior officers. These include a Legion of Merit for his "exceptionally meritorious" work that "contributed inestimably" to the service's wartime mission. He enlisted in 1924 into the US Cavalry, then re-enlisted into the new US Army Air Corps which later became the US Air Force. In WWII he was assigned to Panama and South America in support of anti-air and anti-submarine defense of the Panama Canal. He had many letters of commendation from commanding officers, citing his dedication and leadership. He was hoping to complete his full 30 years of service, but died after 27-1/2 years while at the Far East Air Forces headquarters in Tokyo. On his death he received the highest military honor, the Presidential Accolade, signed by President Truman. He also received the highest honor from General Weyland, commander of the Far East Air Forces. He received another from the Air Force Chief of Staff, General Vandenburg. At his graveside ceremony he received the full military guard of honor salute: seven riflemen firing three volleys ... 21 rounds. The bugler sounded 'Taps', and the folded flag was presented to his widow Margaret Ann. He was a loving father, with many letters to his wife and children during the family's long years of separation in his military service. Military Information: Master Sergeant, US Air Force.7 He Fred Poff left home supposedly after an argument with his father, went to Richmond and joined the Navy. He trained as a postal clerk in Hampton Roads and served on the U.S.S. Nevada until December 29, 1920 when he was dishonorably discharged from the Navy because he was too young when he joined. He sent a few letters to his mom and sisters while in the service. He never returned home or made contact with his parents or siblings after his departure from the Navy. Found on board the Nevada in the 1920 census, he indicated that he was born and from Atlantic City, NJ.1 He was born on March 3, 1901 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia; The U. S. Veterans Administration has a birth date of Nov 21, 1900 and the U.S., Veterans' Gravesites and his gravestone have Mar 4, 1901.2,8,5,7 On circa 1923 his name was legally changed to Joseph Oliver Roberts Sr.8,9,6,10,11 He married Margaret Ann Shore on June 23, 1933 at Rockport, Aransas Co., Texas.12,13 Fred Lee "Freddy" Poff died on July 12, 1952 at Tokyo, Japan, at age 51.6,7

Born January 6, 1917, she lived her entire life in the Roanoke Valley, graduated from Jefferson High School. She was a life-long member of First Church of the Brethren, where she met her husband in her teenage years. Gladys was a caring homemaker and good neighbor. She cared for her mother and mother-in-law in their later years, where she truly earned her angel wings. Both Gladys and Alfred could be seen everywhere as a couple from their joint activity in church events, visiting, and helping friends and family in need, traveling to the beach and several trips to Germany to visit their son. It was unusual to see one without the other. Gladys' love of China painting translated into many gifts for family and friends. She quilted with the church group for many years, providing transportation for those otherwise unable to go. She was a charter member of the Stitch and Chatter Club, a group of young wives in the war years of the 40's who remained lifetime friends. Love and appreciation to companion Martha Redford, the staff at Our Lady of the Valley, her niece Rosemary Thomas, and Good Samaritan Hospice for their help and support during the last few months. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on March 17, 2003.2

Holbrook, 1308 Skyline Drive, was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:30 a.m. yesterday at Memorial Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. Mr. Holbrook was a native of Roanoke, Va., but he had resided in Johnson City for the past 20 years. He was a superintendent at Interstate Foundry and Machine Co. Mr. Holbrook was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army. He member of Princeton Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Johnson City Emergency and Rescue Squad.
