Dan worked a variety of jobs during his time, but the work he was most proud of was his time as a sportswriter for various newspapers. Dan loved sports, watching the Tour de France, Civil War history, classic rock, and studying the Bible. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ralph McNiel and Daphne Louise McNiel (née Wimmer); his sisters, Mary Ann Poff and Sue Altizer; and brother-in-law, Frank Wallace. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle McNiel; sisters, Carol Clower, June McNiel, and Betty McNiel; brothers-in-law, Stan Clower, Terry Altizer, and Kevin Killeen; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to express its gratitude to Good Samaritan Hospice for their wonderful support and care during Dan's final days. on February 9, 2020.5

C; two sons and daughters-in-law, H. Richard and Jean N. Haynes, Augusta, S. C., David A. and Susan Haynes, Roanoke; four granddaughters, Tammy Hannah, Jennifer Haynes, Kathryn Haynes and Meredith Haynes; a brother and his wife, C. Winston Haynes and Betty Haynes, Roanoke; and an aunt, Mrs. Mary Kawas, Miami, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at the gravesite at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 1997 in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. John Hamric and the Rev. Frank Feather will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Pep Club of Air Lee Court Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. F riday at Oakey's North Chapel. on March 7, 1997.2

Left to cherish her memory are children, Leon Franklin Jr. and wife, Melinda, Kim Vest and husband, Matt Clark, and Chris Vest and wife, Janice; siblings, Judy Casto, Greg Phillips, Stewart Phillips, and Tammy Phillips; grandchildren, Josh Franklin, Eli Franklin, Gabe Franklin, Grace Franklin, Tori Vest, Ethan Vest, and Gavin Vest; and dear friends, Kim and Oscar Smith, Sharon and Lee Linkous, Jack Clifton and many others. Shari graduated from Montgomery High School in Montgomery, W.Va. in 1968. She worked as a Treasurer's Clerk for Roanoke County for many years as well as in the ticket office of the Salem Civic Center. Some of Shari's favorite pastimes were quilting, spending time at Smith Mountain Lake, eating her Moose Track ice cream, and going to Mac And Bob's every chance she could. The family will receive friends at Sherwood Memorial Park's Abbey. A graveside service to immediately follow. on June 15, 2017.3
