Mr. Saunders retired in 1985 as the Post Master of Roanoke after 37 years with the United States Postal Service. In 1974, he became the first non-political Post Master appointed in Roanoke and was also a Sectional Center Manager. His territory was the largest in the Eastern Region, covering over 17,000 square miles and including over 242 post offices from Appomatox to the Kentucky boarder. He was a life member of the National Guard Association, retiring as a Major after serving 21 years of active duty and was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service and was also a member of the 29th Division Association, a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, and The Retired Officer's Association. James was a dedicated husband, father and friend and was committed to community service. He was a past President of the Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lion's Club and past member of the Roanoke Valley Torch Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William I. Saunders, of Roanoke and a brother, Robert S. Saunders of High Point, N.C. Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Jean Martin Saunders, his children, John H. Saunders and his wife, Laurie, Roanoke, Jane S. Miller and her husband Eric of Montvale; five grandchildren, Ann-Henley Saunders, J. Martin Saunders, Edwin C. Saunders, E. Christopher Miller and Stephanie L. Miller; brothers, William G. Saunders, Niceville, Fla., John V. Saunders, Dillwyn; sister, Mary Saunders Beasley, Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at Cave Spring United Methodist Church, Wednesday, September 8, 1999, 11 a.m. with the Rev. William C. Logan and Rev. Ward L. Donat officating. Interment will follow in Huffville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Floyd County. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial be sent to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, P. O. Box 77, Bedford, Va., 24523 or the Building Fund of Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive, Roanoke, Va., 24018. The family will receive friends Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7to 9 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. on September 7, 1999.³

     Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale Jeffrey A. (Jeff) McCorkindale, of Roanoke, passed on Wednesday, August 7, 2019. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Robert Brodie and Rev. Rod Longmire. Jeff was born July 5, 1937, and was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Mary McCorkindale, and brother James McCorkindale. He is survived by his daughter Mary Catherine McCorkindale and son-in-law Stephen O’Leyar, and son, Matthew McCorkindale. Also surviving is his granddaughter Caitlin O’Leyar. Jeff lived a life of service through his public and private vocations. He had a long career in security and criminal justice as a polygraph examiner, forensic document examiner and security consultant. In addition, he served as a Roanoke Auxiliary Police Officer for 21 years. Having served in the US army briefly after high school, in later years he joined the Virginia Defense Force (State Guard), attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He took great pleasure in military traditions and camaraderie and the opportunity to serve his state. Jeff practiced his strong Christian faith through community ministry including serving as a Church of the Brethren interim pastor in Goode, Virginia for 5 years. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, he performed in multiple musicals and as a church soloist. He most enjoyed time with family and friends, reading, crossword puzzles, and painting.² He was born on July 5, 1937 at Watertown, Codington Co., South Dakota.^1,2 He married Carolyn Jo Martin, daughter of Howard Lawrence Martin and Dorothy Ora Cole, on June 16, 1962 at Roanoke, Virginia.¹ Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale and Carolyn Jo Martin were divorced on November 19, 1997 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.³ Jeffrey Albert McCorkindale died on August 7, 2019 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 82.²

     Marilyn Julia Minto was buried at Park Cemetery, Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.² She was born on December 31, 1936 at Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.^1,2,3 She married Bruce Bryon Conner Sr., son of George Sutherland and Ethel Vera Conner, on April 28, 1956 at Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.^1,4,2,3 As of April 28, 1956,her married name was Conner. Marilyn Julia Minto died on November 20, 2020 at Stratford, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, at age 83.^2,3 She Marilyn Julia (Minto) Conner, 83, of Stratford, passed away on Friday, Nov. 20, at home. Born in Bridgeport, on Dec. 31, 1936 to Ella May and John Minto, she was pre-deceased by her husband Bruce, a son, Bruce Jr. and a grandson, David McDowell. She survived her husband Bruce by 10 weeks. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, she graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport. She worked for several years at Connecticut National Bank. She is survived by her children, Linda Conner Lambeck, Suzanne McDowell and Richard Conner; her son-in-laws Mark Lambeck and Magaro Vallejo; her grandchildren Philip Conner (Lorena), Matthew Conner (Tina), Scott Lambeck (Amy), Joe McDowell (Dennisse), Ellyn Marinho (Judson), and Gregory Lambeck. Also, her great-grandchildren Antanette, Ashlee, Philip Jr., Jordan, Aaliyah, Joshua, Justice, Madeline, Bryson and Everett; and her great-great grandson Tavon. A graveside service will be held in the spring at a time to be announced in Park Cemetery, 620 Lindley Street, Bridgeport. on December 28, 2020.²

He is survived by his parents; Bruce and Marilyn Conner, a sister Linda Lambeck and her husband Mark, a sister Suzanne McDowell and her husband Margaro Vallejo, a brother Richard Conner, nephews Philip, Matthew, Scotty, Joseph, & Gregory, and a niece Ellyn. Great nephews Philip, Jordan, Joshua, and a great niece Antoinette. He is also survived by his Aunt Florence Karolkowski. And many cousins. He last worked at Lindquist Plumbing of Bpt. He was a great genealogy enthusiast. He and his e-mail buddies conferred about Conner and Minto ancestors. He will be greatly missed by all, including his pets, Gizmo, Spring, Cocoa and Yankee. The family would like to thank the Connecticut Hospice for all their kindness and help. Bruce will be missed by all.
