His Social Security Number was 233-16-2944.12 Harrison Bowne "Booge" Smith was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.8,13 He was born on March 2, 1898 at Kanawha Co., West Virginia.1,2,14 He married Dorothy Thayer on June 23, 1920 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.2 Harrison Bowne "Booge" Smith and Dorothy Thayer were divorced before April, 1940.11 Harrison Bowne "Booge" Smith died on June 27, 1967 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 69.8,10 He A member of a prominent old Charleston family died early, today when fire gutted a portion of the second floor and the attic of his large home in the Edgewood Drive section. Harrison B. Smith, 69, of 915 Edgewood Drive, was found slumped in a vibrator chair. His body was badly burned. According to the Fire Prevention Bureau, the blaze was started by Smith smoking in bed. He apparently got out of the bed and made it to the chair before he collapsed. Fire raged through the bedroom of the nine-room house and intense heat caused an explosion which blew out windows. A neighbor, Charles Fulkerson, smelled smoke and called he fire department. Two pumpers answered and one was at the scene throughout the morning. Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents. Among items saved were two Stradivarius violins, whose value is in the thousands of dollars. Firemen reported the blaze weakened beams and that the bed eventually fell through the ceiling to the first floor. The house is in an area made up of many fine older and newer dwellings. On April 14, 1966, firemen put out a blaze in the home which was also caused by smoking in bed. Damage was minor in that fire. Two firemen were injured this morning. Capt. "Wes" Guthrie fell through the second floor and suffered, facial lacerations. He was treated at Charleston General Hospital. Capt. George Hissom was overcome by smoke and given oxygen treatment at the scene. Although the fire was limited to the upper part of the house, there is expected to be the usual heavy water damage to the first floor. Fire department officials believe the blaze may have been under way some time before it was reported. A slate roof kept he flames from shooting up, and thus forced them to burn out through the windows. Two dogs belonging to the victim, Pat, a basset hound, and Mike, an Irish setter, were on the second floor when the fire occurred. They were saved by firemen who broke a window to get them. The Irish setter had a burn on its back. Mr. Smith lived alone in the home. A housekeeper is employeed during the day, but does not live in the area. The victim was president of the West Virginia Coal & Land Co. and the Kanawha Co. He was a graduate of Princeton University in 1921 and was the son of H. B. Smith, a partner in the law firm of Price, Spilman, Smith and Clay which is now Spilman, Thomas, Battle and Klostermeyer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Robert Marjolin of Paris, France, and a sister, Mrs. George G. Fox of Gainesville, Fla. The body is at the Wilson Funeral Home. Arrangements are incomplete. on June 27, 1967.10
