Burial was in the Restvale Cemetery. on January 3, 1980.² He I was trying my best to remember that name here a while back. I had never heard Eldridge Poff called by that name. My father, Sam Conner, cut timber and sawmilled with Kid (Eldridge) and his brother Raymond Poff. I grew up listening to those old sawmilling stories. They cut timber all over this part of the country and then faraway places like Woodbridge, Buchanan aand different places all around this side of Washington D.C. Many of the timber men of Floyd made their fortunes in Maryland timber. Many of the Poff's, if they were not farming, were in the sawmill business. My dad was always kind of in between farming and timber. Wade Poff used to relate the story of when my father got completely out of farming. It must have been in the late 40's and he had a beautiful patch of beans right above the old cemetery where I have my potato patch now. This land was bought from Mary Simpson Poff the day I was born in 1947. Wade related that just before they were ready to pick a blight hit and killed them all. After that Dad went to work at Radford Arsenal and eventually carpentry where he retired. One of my first jobs out of the Navy was working with him building houses in Roanoke. on January 14, 2005.¹⁶

     Mary Jane "Mollie" Elmore was buried at West View Cemetery, New Castle, Craig Co., Virginia.^1,7,8 She Many of our readers will be saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Mollie Kelley, wife of Mr. R.W. Kelley, at her home in New Castle, on last Tuesday morning after an illness of a few weeks, from general breakdown. The shock, following the death of her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Woods, a few months ago, greatly affected her health and doubtless contributed to her death. Mrs. Kelley as a wife and mother was all that could be desired, ruling her household with love and patience. In her active years she wielded an influence for good in the community. She will be saddly missed, not only by the members of her family, but by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband and three children: Mrs. Moses, Mrs. Boitnott and Mr. P.G. Kelley, the latter of Roanoke, who arrived a day or two before her death. Also a number of relatives in the community. Funeral services were Thursday morning at 10 AM, the Rev. S.A. Morton of Sinking Creek conducting the services. Interment was made in West View Cemetery.⁸ She was born on December 20, 1841 at Botetourt Co. Poff, 97, of Floyd, departed this life peacefully, Saturday December 31, 2011, at her home of 69 years. Lois was born in 1914, the sixth child and fourth daughter in a family of seven children, to the late Peter and Cameron Strickler Sweeney. She was married in 1940 to Herman B. (Sam) Poff who preceded her in death in 1988. She was a graduate of Floyd High School and Radford College and taught school for many years in Floyd and Roanoke Counties. After retirement she cared for her grandchildren and pursued hobbies of quilting, genealogy, and spent many hours cutting thistles and clearing her land. She also enjoyed free-lance writing and had poems and stories published in Ideals Magazine, N.E. A. Journal, Mountain Laurel Magazine and several newspapers. She was a member of Floyd Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her dear son, George Poff, great-grandson, Justin Poff and three brothers, Ballard Sweeney, Lynworth Sweeney, Stickler Sweeney and three sisters, Zellewood Ferguson, Loma Lowe, and Margaret Wilson Hargrove. She is survived by her daughter, Josephine Simmons (Howard), of Lowell, Ohio, and her son, Blane Poff (Brenda), of Willis; grandchildren, Suzanne Hulka (Mark), of Columbus, Ohio, Layne Poff (Frosty), of Floyd, Gregory Poff (Amy), of Willis, and Stacy Orr (Craig), of Wingett Run, Ohio, Brett Bolen (Amy) and Shad Bolen (Lori), of Willis; great-grandchildren, Shayne Poff (Ashley), Blake Poff (Kelly), Jenna Poff, Kila McLean (John) Dustin Poff, Triftan Poff, and Alex Hulka, Hannah Cox (Trent), Olivia and Hunter Bolen, Abigail, Lydia, Rebekah, Elizabeth, Micah, Luke, John Wesleyand Stephen Bolen; one great great-grandson Jonathan Poff; and sister-in-law, Minnie Y.      Clifton Walker Elmore was buried at West View Cemetery, New Castle, Craig Co., Virginia; His tombstone reads "C.S.A. 22nd VA."^1,4,8,5 He Clifton served the CSA during the Civil War. He fought in the Battle of New Market, the Battle of Dry Run, and in the last Battle of the Wilderness. He was wounded in the "great and second toes of the right foot" and was admitted to the CSA Chimborazso Hospital No. 5 in Richmond, Virginia, on 25 May 1864. According to his own recollections, the wound was the result of a gun being accidentally fired as it lay under some blankets near the camp. Recalling his part in the Battle of New Market in an interview shortly before his death he stated that the one big regret of his life was that he shot a Yankee cavalry officer who was leading a charge.⁹

Elmore Applicant stated he was 69 yrs. of age, and was born in New Castle, Virginia, and had resided there for all except 10 yrs. of his life. Applicant entered the Army of the Confederate States of America in July of 1862 at Meadow Bluff in what is now West Virginia. He served in Company D, 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment under Capt. McNeal and Col. Barbee. He left the service in 1865 at the close of the war. Applicant stated that he served as postmaster for 17 yrs., but was now unemployed. He further stated that he was partially disabled because of a "severe double hernia" and the infirmities of age. This statement of physical condition was certified by Dr. B. R. Caldwell. A separate document indicates that his pension was approved on Oct 24, 1914 in the amount of $28.80, pursuant to the Virginia Act of 1902. on August 11, 1914.¹⁰ He NEAR CENTENARIAN RECALLS EXPERIENCES IN CIVIL WAR. Craig Man Not Interested in Present Conflict. Clifton Walker Elmore, Craig County's sole surviving veteran of the War Between the States, peered up from his easy chair in the home of a daughter at New Castle one day recently and declared he had little knowledge of and practically no concern over the World War II. "One war was enough for me," the 95-year-old veteran of three famous battles announced. He can well say that, this man who "fought with the boys" at the Battle of New Market, and with plenty of honor. "The one big thing I regret in my life occurred during the war and at the New Market scene," he said solemnly as he related incidents of his experiences. "You see," he added, "I killed a man." "It was a Yankee officer," he explained. "It occurred at New Market---before or after the charge, I can't recall which---and I saw the fellow astride a horse. He was riding with a cavalry unit, but he was alone and apart from his men. I leveled down on him and fired and he fell from his mount," he related softly, with no indication that he was proud of the feat. "I wish now that I had shot the horse instead, "Mr. Elmore added. Though he took part in two other major conflicts, the Battle of the Wilderness, which he said was fought near Hanover Courthouse, and the Battle of Dry Creek, the aged man said that he did not shoot anyone else that he knew of for certain. Wounded through an accident that occurred while his group were resting, the end of the war found him in a hospital "somewhere in Montgomery Co." under treatment for a shot in the ankle. For some reason, which the old soldier cannot remember, a gun was fired off as it lay under some blankets near the camp. The bullet struck him in the foot. He had some difficulty entering the war, he told. Volunteering at the beginning of the siege, his father cancelled that idea right off, but 2 years later, at the age of 18, he enlisted and joined his fellow soldiers at Lewisburg, W.V., and afterwards moved down into the Valley of Va. during the last year of the war. After the surrender, he returned home and resumed his trade of wagon-maker with his father. At home he has remained for most of his life, leaving Craig Co. only once for any period of time. He lived in Snowville for about four years, plying his trade of wagon making. Sitting at his home on Main St. in New Castle, he observed with some pride that he was born next door. On April 11, 1845, he said he arrived in a house that has now been replaced by a filling station. Next April, the family will celebrate in a small way his 95th birthday anniversary. A staunch Republican, he votes a straight ticket every chance he gets. "I think Roosevelt is all right, but he's a Democrat," was his way of expressing it. Since his wife's death 14 years ago, Mr. Elmore has been living with his daughter, Mrs. J.R. Elmore. He has six other children, all of them living. in December, 1939.¹² He died on April 21, 1940 at New Castle, Craig Co., Virginia, at age 95.^1,4,8 He Clifton Walker Elmore, 95, of New Castle, Craig Co.'s last Confederate veteran and one of the oldest residents of the county, died last night at his home. He participated in the Battle of New Market, Battle of the Wilderness and Battle of Dry Creek. He was a wagon maker by trade and spent practically all of his life in Craig County. Recalling his part in the Batttle of New Market, Mr. Elmore last year told an interviewer that the one big regret of his life was that he shot a Yankee cavalry officer who was leading a charge. He had, he told the interviewer in December of last year, little knowledge and practically no concern over World War II. "One war was enough for me," he declared. Mr. Elmore is survived by the following children: E.E., O.J. and C.D. Elmore and Mrs. J.R. Elmore of New Castle; Rev. C.E. Elmore of Salem; Rev. R.E. Elmore of Phoenix, Ariz; A.W. Elmore of Roanoke, Va; and a step-son, Rev. W.H. Book of Orlando, Fla. The funeral will be at the Christian Church of New Castle at 2 PM tomorrow, conducted by Rev. Calvert Wiley, with interment in West View Cemetery. The body will remain at Lotz-Windley Funeral Home in Roanoke until it is removed to the church in New Castle to lie in state for an hour preceeding the service. on August 22, 1940.⁵
