Mr. Sowder, was at work with his son-in-law, P. Wortz, and had been talking to his daughter few moments before he was stricken with apoplexy. He breathed but a few minutes after he Dr. Gordon Simmons, the city coroner, was called. After viewing the body he deemed an inquest unnecessary. He attributed the man's death to natural causes. The body was removed to the home of the son-in-law, 520 Sixth street, just a few doors from where he died. Mr. Sowder's home was in Franklin county but he had been living here with his daughter several months. Besides Mrs. Wortz, he leaves his widow and several children, who are in Franklin. To the time he was stricken Mr. Sowder had been in excellent health and had never before suffered from serious physical trouble. on March 25, 1910.12

Reed and Miss Laura Sowder, of Roanoke; Mrs. Henry Rawley, of Roanoke County; Mrs. E. P. Redmon, of Joliet, Ill; Miss Anna Sowder, of Washington, D. C., and J. A. Sowder, of Roanoke, Active pall bearers were J. E. Bond, L. H. Wertz, G. L. Spencer, Harmon Smith, T. D. Franklin, and George Tice. Honorary pall bearers were: Dr. L. G. Richards, George Boone, Irvin A. Harvey, W. A. LeGrande, Dr. Philip Clore, J. M. Reed, B. L. Mitchell, J. L. Howery, W. R. Griggs, Roy Foutz, Dr. Jones, J. W. Gray. Grand daughters of the deceased served as flower bearers. Besides five daughters and one son Mrs. Sowder is survived by the following grandchildren: Fannie, Rhoda, and Louise Wertz; Marie, Kathryn, Dorman and Clifford Hawley; James, Anna, Lucy Mary Redman; Geneva, Martha Ann, and James A. Sowder, Jr; June, Juanita, and Wanda Reid. on March 31, 1930.7

She was a member of the Haran Baptist Church. Mrs. Mills leaves two loving children to cherish her memories, Anna Lee Whaley and her husband, John "Buddy" of Moneta, and John Mills and his wife, Helen of Blue Ridge; nine grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her brothers-in-law, Wilford "Wick" Mills and his wife, Esther of Salem, Clinton Mills and his wife, Marie of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Poff and Edna Poff, and Ruth Green, all of Roanoke, Audrey Mills of Vinton, Frances Mills of Salem and Irthel and husband, Lewis Simpson of Bristol, Tenn. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. on November 9, 2005.4
