Harry Milburn Jacobs Jr.1,2,3,4,5

M, b. July 23, 1928, d. May 29, 2016
Harry Milburn Jacobs Jr. was buried at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, 320 Pollock Street, New Bern, Craven Co., North Carolina.4,5 He was born on July 23, 1928 at New Bern, Craven Co., North Carolina.1,2 He married Mary Trevaleah "Trevaleah" Long, daughter of William Franklin "Bill" "Willie" Long and Mary Gladys "Gladys" Conner, on June 23, 1954 at Roanoke, Virginia.6,1 Harry Milburn Jacobs Jr. and Mary Trevaleah "Trevaleah" Long were divorced on April 13, 1962 at Roanoke, Virginia.3 Harry Milburn Jacobs Jr. died on May 29, 2016 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 87.4,5 He JACOBS, Harry M. Jr., a nationally recognized advertising leader and chairman emeritus of The Martin Agency, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at his home in Richmond, Va. He was 87. Born and reared in New Bern, N.C., Harry was the son of Harry Milburn Jacobs and Nina Gibbs Jacobs. He began his interest in advertising during his education at East Carolina College and continued his education at the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington, D.C. Harry served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, where he worked as a communications specialist in the office of the deputy chief of staff in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. During a career that spanned five decades, Harry's national recognition began while serving as president of Cargill, Wilson & Acree, the South's largest advertising agency during the '60s. He received the American Advertising Federation's silver medal as Advertising Man of the Year in 1972 and joined The Martin Agency as partner and president in 1977. From there, Harry went on to be one of the few people in advertising to be a four-time Hall of Famer. In 1986, he was named a charter member of the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame with Tom Wolfe and Roger Mudd. In 1991, he was named to the North Carolina Advertising Hall of Fame in Chapel Hill. In 2001, he was inducted into the Creative Hall of Fame for The One Club of Art and Copy in New York, along with his good friend, Britain's legendary David Abbott, and in 2004, he was named to the American Advertising Federation's Hall of Fame in New York. The award-winning work and army of talent cultivated by Jacobs inevitably attracted advertisers who wanted something special - advertisers who normally would have never considered an agency outside of New York. The Martin Agency, which was relatively small when Jacobs joined the company in 1977, went on to become one of the top creative agencies in the country, stewarding the branding and marketing of such national and international clients as Coke, Hanes, Mercedes-Benz, Saab, GEICO, PING, UPS and Walmart. The Wall Street Journal also couldn't miss Jacobs' influence. With a full-page announcement titled "Wild About Harry," they honored him as one of the industry's "creative leaders," and they took him around the world to spread his creative gospel. Jacobs was a tireless promoter of creative thinking and exquisite execution, serving on numerous industry boards and panels and lecturing in five countries, 35 states, 66 cities and more than a dozen schools and universities. A mentor of many, Harry earned his unofficial title: "The Dean of Southern Advertising." Jacobs was a founding board member of one of the top graduate advertising programs in the country, the Brandcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University, and he served on the Board of Advisors for the University of North Carolina School of Journalism. He also served on the Board of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Mass Communications and the VCU Foundation Board and the Board of the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He was a trustee at both Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, N.C. A generous community servant, Harry served on many boards of directors during his career, including the Richmond Symphony, Richmond's Children's Museum, Goodwill Industries, the Governor's Alliance for a Drug-Free (continued...) JACOBS (continued) Virginia, Council for America's First Freedom, Richmond Renaissance, Monument Avenue Foundation and the Arts Council of Richmond. In the early 1990s, North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt appointed Harry to the Tryon Palace Commission. One of Harry's greatest passions, outside of his family and his career, was the Boy Scouts, as he was involved in scouting for more than four decades. He was the first Cub Scout to become a Boy Scout in Troop 13 in his hometown of New Bern, N.C. Harry went on to get his Eagle Scout designation in 1945. He served as a scoutmaster in Greensboro in the late '50s and served on the Troop Committee of Richmond's Troop 444 in the late '70s. Harry served on the executive board and the Cabinet of the Robert E. Lee Council in Richmond and he received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 1989 by the Boy Scouts of America. Harry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara "Bobbi" Mills Jacobs and their three children, Kathryn Jacobs Wessell (Mark), Christopher Gibbs Jacobs (Susan) and Letitia Jacobs Caudle (Rob); and eight grandchildren. Harry also has two children from a previous marriage, Page Jacobs Ricciardi and William Franklin Jacobs. The family would like to thank Kevin Terrell, Phalla Browne, Mary Toombs, Kim Hobson, Denise Hairfield and Beverly Perry for all of their loving care and support. Burial will be held at a later date at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern, N.C. on May 31, 2016.5
