Maynard was born in Roanoke County November 26, 1927 and lived in the area all his life. He was the son of the late Oscar G. Manning and Hattie M. Bowles Lawrence. Maynard was employed with General Electric for more than 30 years. He served in the United States Navy, was a Mason, a member of the Shrine, and enjoyed genealogy. In addition to his parents, Maynard was preceded in death by his son Barry Lynn Manning; brother Vincent Manning and a sister, Janie Smith. He is survived by his long-time friend, Evelyn Hazelwood; son Timothy Manning of Roanoke; daughter Karen Nicholson of Blacksburg; grandson Adam Manning; sister and brother-in-law Ocelia and Hubert DeWeese of Bent Mountain; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Harold Conner; parents, William and Ruby Stump. Hilda was known to many as “Granny” whether they were family or not. She was a blessing to all who knew her. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She made it a priority to be involved in the lives of people she loved. She was there for the good moments, as well as the bad. Granny made everything better with just her presence. She was always a very independent, hard-working lady. She fought hard to stay strong and kept faith until her last breath. Even on the tough days, her smile remained. Hilda is survived by her husband of 60 years Paul Ferris; daughters, Dreama Tolbert (Bink) and Rhonda Spangler (G.C.); granddaughters, Michelle Harmon, Sonya Griffith (Tony), Ashley McCoy (Will), and Kenzie Tolbert (Nick Baldwin); great-grandsons, Ethan Griffith (Dakota Galla), Trevor Harmon (Addie), Easton Griffith (Anna Britton), and Adam Harmon. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many people that loved Hilda over the years. She was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia, and also spent part of her youth in Salem, Virginia. She graduated from The College of William & Mary (BA) and Troy State University (MEd). She married Harold DeCourcy in 1954 and they were together 49 years until his death in 2003. Phyllis was a longtime resident of Waynesboro, Virginia, where she taught at Berkeley Glenn Elementary School and then finished her career at Kate Collins Middle School. Even into her 80s she continued tutoring many students. She was an amazing person, always on the go, loved all adventures, large and small, and had a fondness for large, black dogs. Her adventures stopped with the onset of dementia, and she spent her last years being well cared for at Regency of Augusta. She is survived by her three children, four grandchildren, and numerous friends, plus the many students who stayed in touch with her for years. There will be no services.
