She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Martin and Darlene Martin; son, Kenneth Martin (Leigh); daughter-in-law, Karen Martin; grandchildren, Amanda Brogan, John Brogan, Hayley Martin, Bryan Martin, Trinity Martin and Tatum Martin; great-grandchildren, Kyla, Madison, Adria and James Lee; brother, Fred Nichols (Patricia); sisters, Lena Hoback (Norman) and Sue Smith; and sisters-in-law, Jane E. Nichols and Marian Nichols. Special thanks to Hayley Martin for the wonderful care of her grandmother for the last several years and to the staff at Carrington Cottage and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their wonderful care in the last months. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. on February 9, 2021.6

Light, and Zane Light; and grandsons, Kevin and Christopher; and her former husband, Roy Martin whom she married on September 23, 1939 in Weston, Lewis County, WV. Survivors include: daughter, Marsha Dale Ray of Alderson; son, Richard Martin, Sr., of Oak Hill; five grandchildren, Robert Flack, II, Joseph Flack, Richard Martin, Jr., Deborah Lee Kincaid and Cara Lee Evans; six great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Alexandra, Shayanne, Megan, Erica and Kimberly; and great-great-grandchild, Caleb Ray McMillion. A graveside service will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson, with Rev. Nathan Miller officiating. on August 4, 2013.2

She was 89. For years, Goodno was a deacon and circle leader at the Church by the Sea. "She had an ability to write a prayer, memorize it and deliver it the next day," said John Alden Goodno, her husband of 64 years. "She did that on many an occasion." But her great interest was flowers -- roses were her favorite. Goodno, a member of the Miami Beach Garden Club, traveled to places like Peru, Alaska and England to judge flower competitions. "She inherited this love of flowers from her parents," her husband said. Born in West Virginia, Goodno worked her way through Marshall University and later endowed the Reba Light Goodno Room as part of the Ericson Alumni Building. She was also a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority of the Coral Gables alumni chapter. She was a 25-year resident of Bal Harbour. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Dr. John Goodno Jr. and Edward Goodno; two sisters; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church by the Sea. on October 28, 1993.8

Survivors include a son, Charles Edward Bergendahl and his wife, Ella Mae, of Roanoke, Va; a daughter, Sarah Ann Williams and her husband, Jack, of Alexandria, Va; three grandchildren, Amy Lynn Rush, Charles Allen Bergendahl and Eric B. Williams; and her dear sister and care giver, Eva E. O'Dell of Beckley. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. David Carrico officiating. Duke; great-granddaughter, Abigail Lamb; great-grandson, Alexander Lamb; brother, Burchell M. Light; sister, Elaine Brown; several cousins and nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a beautiful young friend, Mark Guglar and many special close friends. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in West End United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott M. Rimer with Masonic rites. The burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling the arrangements. He was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and was a great sports fan. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, the former Miss Emma Ernestine Cooke, whom he married Aug. 18, 1939; two sons, Steve Light and his wife, Betty, of Colonial Heights, Va., and Darrell Light and his wife, Janice, of Foley, Ala; two daughters, Carole Light Stephens and her husband, John, of Maxeys, Ga., and Dreama Light of Alderson; a sister, Elaine Brown of Bradford, Pa; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and neph-ews; and a host of friends. Service will be 2 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson Cemetery. Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson. on September 8, 2007.3

The retired teacher at Southwest Elementary School died of complications from cancer Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at Highlands Lake Center. She was 77. "She wiped a many a nose. She was very stern but very loving, too," said Henry Higginbotham, her husband of 54 years and a schoolteacher, too. "She got me into it." Born in Marie, W.Va., on June 30, 1923, she and Henry Higginbotham were married in September 1946. "She helped me through college after World War II," Henry Higginbotham said. The couple came to Lakeland from Dayton, Ohio, 45 years ago. After her three children began to get a little older, Mrs. Higginbotham began her 23-year career, teaching kindergarten at Cleveland Court. "She was hired by the PTA. That was back when it wasn't part of the public schools -- when they first had kindergarten available," said her daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Ann Rodda of Lakeland. She served as a teacher's aide at Combee Elementary before she returned to school, graduating in 1976, with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from University of South Florida. Mrs. Higginbotham then taught kindergarten and third grade at Southwest Elementary until her retirement in 1986. "There are a lot of kids who remember my mom," Rodda said. "She loved her grandchildren very much." After her retirement, she and her husband became active in helping organize annual reunions for his fellow Navy veterans of World War II. "She was very active in the newsletter. They kind of kept the whole group together," Rodda said. She became a member of First Presbyterian Church in 1956, and was a member of Circle 8. In addition to her husband and daughter, she is survived by her sons, Hank Higginbotham and Donald Charles Higginbotham, both of Lakeland; brothers, Orba Light, Portsmouth, Va., and Burchell Light, Alderson, W.Va; sister, Elaine Brown, Bradford, Pa; seven grandchildren. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heath Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Paxon Morrison Chapel, 175 Lake Hollingsworth, Lakeland. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 175 Lake Hollingsworth, Lakeland, FL 33801. on June 7, 2001.3

She is survived by two sons, John (Claire) Slimick, Bradford, and Anthony Slimick, Pleasanton, Calif; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Everett Slimick, two brothers, and a sister. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, at the First Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Brest officiating. Private burial will be in Fletcher's Cemetery, Alderson, W.Va. on April 11, 2009.4

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Phipps Vest; three sisters, Mrs. Faye Lilly of Sophia, Mrs. Charles (Glada) Vest of Beckley and Mrs. Russell (Helen) Bailey of Pleasant Hills, and two brothers, Jack Vest of Vinton and Fred Vest of MacArthur. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. on March 23, 1977.4
