Shirley Alvis Conner Emmie Lou Weddle, who was almost 5 years old when she witnessed the tradegy remembers- "I remember that night as though it was last week. Helen Sue and I both talk about the fact that we can't ever pass that place without thinking of that night. I remember Shirley complaining that something had happened to the car when Ferguson passed us. When we stopped I wanted to get out and go with him back to the other car but mother wouldn't let me. We were watching out the back window and saw Shirley run around behind Ferguson's car. Mother immediately pulled us out of the car and over the bank. She got Ferguson's license number as he drove off. We got back in the car and Shirley staggered up to the car and fell backward. I remember someone pulling up his vest and the blood rushing out. We went on to the hospital and Aunt Ethia and Uncle Glen were waiting at the hospital when we got there. Ferguson came up for parole several times and mother always wrote a letter to the Parole Board, reminding them of his crimes that night. I think he was finally paroled while mother was still in North Carolina and I think he died many years ago. He was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.2 He was born on November 27, 1911 at Floyd Co., Virginia.2 He died on June 16, 1933 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 21.2 He "COUNTY MAN SHOT FOLLOWING WRECK "Shirley Conner, 21, Wounded in Chest by Unidentified Motorist "LEFT LYING IN ROAD "Guards From Convict Camp on Bent Mountain Road Bring Victim Here Shirley Conner, 21, of Bent Mountain, is in a critical condition at Jefferson hospital, suffering from a bullet wound in the chest, inflicted by an unidentified white man following an automobile accident on the Floyd highway about 8:30 o'clock last night, it was reported by county authorities. "State and County police early this morning were searching all highways in this section for the assailant, who was riding in a Chevrolet coupe. "Physicians at Jefferson hosspital said at midnight that Conner had an even chance of recovery, although the bullet passed completely through his chest, causing severe hemorrages. "The automobile accident, which preceded the shooting, occurred about one mile south of the Roanoke county line, in Floyd county. Conner, accompanied by his sister, a Mrs. Weddle, was driving towards Roanoke when the other machine was said to have side-swiped him and sped away, officers reported. Conner's machine was not badly damaged and he gave chase, it was said by Deputy Sheriff J. L. Richardson, who investigated. The chase continued for about three miles, it was said, before the other machine came to a halt on the edge of the road. Conner stopped alongside the machine and began questioning the driver, the officer said he was told. "The man was quoted as saying that he regretted the accident and asked if would be satisfactory to make necessary repairs. Conner agreed to this, it was stated, whereupon he was told to pull to the side of the road in order that a survey could be made of the damage. After clearing the road, Conner walked back to the Chevrolet and was fired upon, the bullet piercing his straw hat just above the scalp. Running behind the machine, Conner sought refuge but was followed and shot through the chest, it was related. "Following the second shot, the man re-entered his car and drove away towards Roanoke, leaving Conner lying in the road, officers stated. The shots attracted guards from a nearby convict camp, who went to the scene and brought the wounded man and his sister to the hospital. The two verdicts rendered against Ferguson, seems to have met with the approval of the public in general. circa June 17, 1933.6 He "THE MURDER OF SHIRLEY ALVIS CONNER "Roy Ferguson first killed Zac T. Nalls and then went on towards Copper Hill and ran into Conner's car and damaged the fender, but never stopped. He kept going but they got his license tag number. After going on a little further Ferguson had stopped and when Conner came up with him and spoke to him about it and Ferguson said that he did not know that he had struck Conner's car, but he said that they could settle that. Mr. Conner had his sister, Mrs. William M. Weddle and two children in the car taking them to Roanoke on a visit. Conner and Ferguson got out of their car to see how much damage was done. When Conner came near the Ferguson car Ferguson drew his pistol and fired at Conner, glancing the top of his head, the ball coming through the hat. Conner got behind the car, the Ferguson walked around the car and shot again and it was this shot that killed him. Ferguson got in his car and drove away. He was arrested and lodged in the Roanoke jail at first then brought to Floyd jail. Conner lived until the next day. "Ferguson will have to serve a long period. Twenty years for killing Nalls and then will have to enter upon a life term for the killing of Conner. on August 3, 1933.6
