They lived in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Arlington before he retired in 1992. Mrs. Shank worked as a registered nurse for the Department of State in Africa and as an editor and contracts officer for the federal government before retiring in 2000. She was the widow of Dock M. Shanks. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Berta Lovell, Floyd, Mrs. Betty Semler, Waldorf, Md., Mrs. Peggy Orr, West Palm Beach, Fla; six sons, Alvin Shanks, June Shanks, both of Salem, Earl Shanks, Salisbury, Md., Lewis Shanks, Covington, Quinton Shanks, Ormond Beach, Fla., Thomas Shanks, Orange City, Fla; one sister, Mrs. Bruce Stewart, Salem; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral was Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1975, at 11:00 a.m. at the Little White Church, Terry's Fork, with the Rev. Jesse Bishop and the Rev. William Westbrook officiating. Interment in the Huffville Church Cemetery. on December 25, 1975.³
