Though born outside of Johnson City, Ethel lived most of her life at White Pine. She attended Dandridge High School, Bridgewater College, graduated from nursing school at Roanoke Hospital, Roanoke, Va., received a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with credits towards her doctorate in Adult Basic Education. She met Elgin P. Kintner, M.D., at a church conference in Ocean Grove, N.J., and they were married in 1942. In 1952, Elgin and Ethel moved to Maryville. A busy mother with four children, she gave her vitality and energy to her church, the children's schools and her community. She was active in the Women's Auxiliary of Blount County and Tennessee Medical Societies, a volunteer teacher at the Job Corps Center at Townsend, she tutored underprivileged students, was a Girl Scout leader honored for 20 years of service, and was a leader of the Appalachian Trail Youth Conference. In 1987, she and her husband Elgin started a chapter of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She was a member of the First Families of Tennessee. Ethel enjoyed more than 50 years of membership and service at New Providence Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Women's Association and a teacher in the intermediate Sunday school program. Always an energetic student and life-long learner, Ethel became interested in Adult Basic Education and set up the ABE program sponsored by Alcoa, Maryville and Blount County, where she served as teacher/coordinator for 12 years. These experiences started her on a writing career with regular contributions to her professional journals and publication of her book, "Education: The Plight of the Illiterate Adult" Her autobiography, "Growing up in Appalachia" has been enjoyed by many readers. Ethel leaves behind the following family: daughter, Rebecca King and her husband Rufus B. King of Friendsville; son, Richard Kintner of Maryville; daughter, Johanna Bryant and her husband Larry Bryant of Knoxville; daughter, Ella Brown and her husband Tom Brown of Van Wert, Ohio; grandson, Kevin King of Durham, N.C; grandson, Bradley King of Franklin; grandson, Micah Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandson, Caleb Brown of Van Wert, Ohio; she has four great-grandchildren. Ethel lived each day to its fullest and will be remembered for her ability to make each individual, regardless of circumstances, abilities and disabilities, feel important, capable, valued, and lifted up in her presence. A family graveside service will be held at the French Broad Church of the Brethren, White Pine, and a memorial service for all who wish to attend will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville. Ethel's father was instrumental in helping establish the Heifer International and was known as the sea-going cowboy when he accompanied the second shipload of animals to Greece. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts may be sent to the Heifer International, the Imagination Library c/o the Maryville Kiwanis Foundation, Maryville, or to building fund of New Providence Presbyterian Church, Maryville.
