Beginning at the crop roads and running with the road Eastward to my outside line Which adjoins Fleming Poff and with my line to the road at the meeting house and with the road to a branch thus leaving the road running up a lane to the top of a hill near an old barn to a crop fence and with the fence at the Pine Spur road and with road to the beginning which land I also value at six dollars per acre.
It is also my will that my son Samuel S. Conner to have a certain boundary of land I have between the boundarys I gave to my two sons Peter and Albert Conner which land I also value at six dollars per acre. I also give to my said son Samuel one other peace of land beginning at the top of the hill at the crop fence near an old barn and running with the land with road to my outside which joins John O. Conner. All the land I have on the south side of the above named road to the above named crop fence which I also value at six dollars per acre.
It is also my will that my daughter Mary Poff, wife of Peter Poff, to have a certain boundary of land beginning at the old barn at the top of the hill and running with the road to the meeting house line and with my line _____ above the meeting house to a new fence and down the same to a Branch and down said Branch to my outside line and with it to the road leading to the above named Barn which land I also value at six dollars per acre.
It is also my will that my grandson Zachariah Carr to have one hundred dollars out of my estate provided he lives to be twenty one years of age.
It is also my will that all the above parcels of land to be surveyed and plats made out so as to ascertain the number of acres to each of the above named sons and daughters so they may calculate the amount of my real estate.
It is also my will that the foregoing named sons and daughters pay in money to my son Jonathan Conner and my daughter, Julina Carr, wife of John Carr, _____to make them equal with the foregoing named sons and daughters. The amount of estate to be equally divided between all.
It is also my desire that my three sons Peter, Albert, and Samuel S. Conner to be my executors and guardian for my grandson Zachariah Carr.

Born September 26, 1928, at Cambria, Virginia, he was the son of the late George Gilmer and Evie Gilmer Linkous. Jack was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy, he received the World War II Victory Medal and served on the USS Warrington. For most of Jack's life, he worked in sales, having retired from Bluefield Supply Company. Prior to moving to Princeton, he lived in Pulaski, Virginia where he was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served as an Elder and taught Sunday School. After his retirement, Jack kept busy, having volunteered for Princeton Community Hospital, working in the garden and being a true jack of all trades. He loved West Virginia and always had a smile on his face. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Conner; a baby son, Bernard Jack Gilmer Jr. and a baby daughter, Brenda Faye Gilmer. Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, whom he loved dearly, Martha Gilmer; daughter, Coretha Loughridge and husband Johnny of Tyler, Texas; stepdaughter, Sheryl Conner of Bedford, Texas; grandchildren, Lindsey Conner and Paul Morra; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Velma Kinzie of Roanoke, Va., Shirley Ann Linkous of Blacksburg, Va., Joyce Feazell of Roanoke, Va., C.B. Linkous of Riner, Va; special friend, Sara Lancaster of Blacksburg, Va. A graveside service will be held 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with his son-in-law, Pastor Johnny Loughridge officiating. A time of sharing will be held Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Linkous, Timothy Linkous, Brandon Linkous, Robert Dowdy, Gary Dowdy, Mike Dowdy, and B.J. Dotson. Survivors in addition to her mother and her husband include one son, Melvin David McNamara of Littleton, Colo; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Milajean) Brown of Peach Bottom, Pa., Miss Freda McNamara of Troutsville, Va., and Mrs. Walter (Loretta) Kelly of Beckley; one brother, Elbert T. Poff of Princeton; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. on December 10, 1981.³

Sowder and Lucinda Poff Sowder and the granddaughter of Jacob and Rhoda Gray Sowder. She made her residence in Roanoke since 1905. Before she passed away she made her home with her sister, Lucy Sowder Reed and brother-in-law, Clyde S. Reed, of 2717 Spring Road, S.W. Also surviving are a brother, J. A. Sowder, 1007 Hershberger Rd., N.W; a sister, Miss Anna L. Sowder, Washington, D.C; 13 nieces, four nephews and 29 great nieces and great nephews. on January 13, 1967.²

She enjoyed painting and poetry writing and was a member of the Professional Writers Club of D.C. Surviving are twelve nieces and four nephews; June R. Morris, Juanita R. Stanley, Wanda R. Nelson, Marie H. Minter, Kate H. Bow, Louise W. Craghead, Geneva M. Seaman, Martha A. Sowder, James A. Sowder Jr., Dorman W. Hawley, Clifford (Jack) Hawley, all of Roanoke; Ann L. Johnston, El Cerrito, Calif; Lucy R. Weller, Plainfield, Ill; Mary R. McElroy, Aurora, Ill; Dolores S. Johnson, Douglassville, Ga; James E. Redmon, Palm City, Fla; and a number of great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. on December 17, 1991.¹

     Lucy Maude Sowder was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.^1,3,4,8 She was born on May 18, 1900 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^9,1,2,3,4 She married Clyde Sherman Reed, son of James Riley Reed and Lula Odell Cole, on October 17, 1922 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,10,3,7,5,8 As of October 17, 1922,her married name was Reed.⁵ Lucy Maude Sowder died on March 9, 1970 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 69.^1,3,4,8 She Mrs. Lucy Sowder Reed, age 69, of 2717 Spring Road, S.W., died in a local hospital Monday. She retired from the Veterans Hospital in Salem, Virginia, in 1962, after thirty-four years of government service. Surviving are her husband, Clyde S. Reed; three daughters, Mrs. Theodore R. Morris, Mrs. Jack D. Stanley, Mrs. William C. Nelson, all of Roanoke; a brother, James A. Sowder, Roanoke; a sister, Miss Anna L. Sowder, Washlington, D.C; and five grandchildren. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. on March 11, 1970.⁸

     William Peyton Wertz was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.^1,4,6,5 He was born on September 25, 1872 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.^2,3,4 He married Lelia Estelle Sowder, daughter of William James Sowder and Lucinda C. Poff, on December 26, 1895 at Floyd Co., Virginia.² William Peyton Wertz died on November 8, 1958 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 86.^4,6,5 He William Payton Wertz of 3607 Grandin Rd., SW, died Saturday in a Roanoke hospital. He retired from Norfolk and Western Railway in 1937 after working there about 40 years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Fannie M. Brady, Mrs. Rhoda W. Cooper and Mrs. Louise Craghead, all of Roanoke; four brothers, Rufus and John R. Wertz, of Roanoke County; Enos Wertz, Roanoke; and James Wertz, Buffalo, Wyo; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Nienke, Roanoke County, and Mrs. Ollie Akers, Orlando, Fla; and one grandson. Burial will be in Fairview. Pallbearers will be Nienke, I. L. Wertz, Irvin Wertz, T. A. Sowder, Enos Sowder and Albert Sowder. on November 9, 1958.⁵

     William Henry Hawley was buried at Belleview Church Cemetery (also known as Laurel Ridge Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Bent Mountain, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^2,3,1 He was born on October 18, 1870 at Roanoke, Virginia.³ He married Lula Manda Sowder, daughter of William James Sowder and Lucinda C. Poff, on January 23, 1908 at Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.^4,5,3 William Henry Hawley died on February 12, 1958 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 87.^2,3,1 He William Henry Hawley, 87, of RFD 2, Salem, died Wednesday night Roanoke hospital. He was a farmer and former employe of the Norfolk and Western Railway, Surviving are two daughters and two sons; Mrs. E. J. Minter, Vinton; Mrs. Kate Bowe, Dorman W. Hawley and Clifford V. Hawley, Roanoke County; two sisters and two brothers; Mrs. James Poague, Wabash, Ind; Mrs. Joel Grisso, Roanoke County; Robert Hawley, Portland, Ore; Frank P. Hawley, Roanoke, and three grandchildren. Interment will be in Bellview. Pallbearers will be Edd Grisso, Irving Wertz, Wilson Prillaman, Harry Wertz, J. D. Coon and J. T. Kessler. on February 14, 1958.¹
