Born July 28, 1927, in Pensacola, Fla., he was the son of the late Walter Roden and Josephine Backus Roden. Mr. Roden served in the US Army during WWII as a paratrooper, credited with 50 jumps. He married the former Betty Bennett Wells on Nov., 10, 1989. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children; Walter Roden, Sherry Ferguson, Debbie Bobbitt, and Eddie Wayne Roden all of Roanoke, Va; four stepchildren, Connie Collins of Reliance, Jerry Wells of Seaford, Debbie McKamey of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Colleen Wells of Galestown; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Roden and three sisters. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans'Cemetery in Beulah. Pallbearers will be Bill Collins, Bill Bennett, Leroy Wheedleton, Kenneth Bennett, Jeff Newton, and Jimmy Travers. on July 8, 2008.2

     Thurman Claude Wyatt Thurman Claude Wyatt, age 86, of Shawsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024. He was born on August 1, 1937, in Ashe County, North Carolina, where he spent his early childhood. As a teenager, his family moved to Pennsylvania. He married his wife, Sylvia, in 1958. Thurman had a variety of jobs in his youth but began working his lifelong trade as a mechanic at Ford Motor Company in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He went on to work for Worthy Bros. Pipeline in Wilmington, Delaware, as a mechanic and later a shop foreman for approximately 27 years. After his time at Worthy Bros., he went on to live in his wife’s hometown of Shawsville, Virginia. The two of them went into business with their daughter and son-in-law at Wyatt & Trail Oak Furniture where he eventually retired in 1997. After his retirement he began doing small engine repairs in his backyard workshop for friends and neighbors. Thurman loved telling stories and talking with friends and family. He was a great conversationalist and kept everyone up to date on current events. He enjoyed his westerns (especially Gunsmoke), playing the lottery, watching “The Wheel”, listening to bluegrass music, and playing his guitar. Thurman was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Conner Wyatt, his parents Bynum and Clyde Wyatt, his brothers Gwyn Wyatt, Charles “Ned” Wyatt Sr., his sister Geraldine Wyatt Vannoy and his granddaughter Christina Wyatt Lucas. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Wyatt Tunnell; his daughters Debra Starkey, Linda Trail (Gilbert), Alma Taylor (Larry); his sons Joseph Wyatt “Joe” (Judy), Thurman C. Wyatt Jr. “T.C.” (Janet), and Dougie Wyatt (Gina); thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous family and friends that he cherished. Thurman’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Whitney and Iva at Heritage Hall, as well as the staff at Enhabit Home Health for the kindness and care they provided to him. Interment will follow at Piedmont Cemetery in Shawsville, VA.2 He was buried at Piedmont Cemetery, Rt. 11 to Shawsville, turn at nursing home, Rt. 637, about 8 miles on the left, Montgomery Co., Virginia.2,3 He was born on August 1, 1937 at Ashe Co., North Carolina.3,2 He married Sylvia Jean Conner, daughter of William B. He leaves behind his four children Deborah Peters, Billy Price, Tim Price, and Michael Willis. Also, his sister Betty Maney and brother’s William and Steve Price. Pops was a simple man who in the last couple of years of his life enjoyed most of his time outside with his beloved animals Alice, Jasmine and Duncan. He enjoyed working with his hands whether it be on an old car or chinking a beautiful log home. His greatest joy over the past years was watching all of his nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. This last year of his life was full of rough times but he made it through each day with the help of his family. His face would light up with every hug and kiss! Pops will be missed by his family and all of his friends. Jerry joined the Army during the Vietnam War. After service, he moved to the state of Michigan where he found employment with General Motors for 30 years until his disability retirement in 2005. At that time, he returned to his home state of Virginia in Riner where he found solace in his log home on the mountain until his death on December 29, 2023. Jerry is survived by one daughter, Katelyn Marie Thomas, who is now serving in the United States Navy, stationed in Japan. Jerry Lee is also has three living siblings out of seven, two living sisters, Ruth Madeline Price of Pulaski, Lillian Carol Conner and husband James of Christiansburg; and one brother, Michael Raye Willis and wife Wanda of Georgia. Interment will follow in the Restvale Cemetery.5 He was buried at Restvale Cemetery, 7529 Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.5 He married Sandy Unknown.1 Jerry Lee Willis was born on October 23, 1948 at Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.8,5 He died on December 29, 2023 at Virginia at age 75.5

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Brenda Wimmer, of Bedford, James W. Wimmer, of Roanoke, Lee and Kathy Wimmer, of Roanoke; his daughter, Marsha M. Weddle, of Roanoke; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy W. Tuck, of Roanoke. on March 22, 2010.6
