He was born March 2, 1929, to the late Cluber K. Rierson and Cassie Rierson Dabbs and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Aldene (Pug Reed and Iola (Billie) Whitenack. His first job was helping with the construction of the concrete silos at the original Roanoke City Mills at the age of 16. He later became a self-employed Concrete Contractor for 65 years and took great pride in his work, leaving his footprint all around the Roanoke Valley. He served in the 101st Airborne stationed in Germany, and his M1 Rifle team represented the United States in a NATO shoot. Pops, or Jimmy as he was affectionately known, was a Floyd County land owner. He enjoyed farming, riding his tractor, making great memories with family and friends, coin collecting, and as an avid marksman, he loved target shooting and reloading ammo. Later in life Pops took great pleasure in supervising the family garden and sitting by the pond, feeding the fish and solving world problems. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marion Devenney Rierson; a daughter, Cynthia Lynn Scott and husband, Leslie; son, Matthew William Rierson and wife, Ann; and granddaughter, Dulaney Ferris Rierson, all of Roanoke; three nieces, Shirley Gerken, of Rescue, Calif., Carole Ferguson, of Roanoke, and Linda Whitenack, of Charlotte, N.C; and one nephew, Lewis Harold Whitenack Jr., of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her parents, Loletta Marion Mulrine and Benjamin T. Devenney; her sisters, Pauline Jennmann and Vivian B. Devenney; and a brother-in-law, Billy Westerguard. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Westerguard; her daughter and husband, Les and Cindy Scott; son and wife, Matthew and Ann Rierson and their daughter, Delaney Rierson and her son, Grayland. Marion was a faithful member of Covenant Reformed Episcopal Church for over 30 years. She was a believer in Christ Lord and Savior. During her membership Marion and her husband cleaned the church. He was born in Farmington, MD, March 30, 1934 to the late James E. and Myrtle (Wilson) Rierson of Colora, MD. A 20-year veteran of the United State Air Force served during the Korea and Vietnam era, and the last 4 years in White House Communications. He dedicated 20 more years to Rockwell International as Marketing Manager in the field of Avionics. He retired in 1997. His favorite past time was golf, history and writing short stories.
