D." Bower Sr. died on April 16, 2012 at Virginia at age 64.5 He James David (J.D.) Bower, 64, of Floyd, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, April 16, 2012. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Christine Bower. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Melba Hawley Bower. Together they raised two fine sons, Jay and Timmy. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Penny and Melodie; and three grandchildren, Haleigh, Mariya, and Jacob; his brothers, Luther Bower and Phyllis, Daniel Bower, and Lemuel Bower and Susie; and several nieces and nephews. James served as superintendent of Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. He worked at Federal Mogul for 34 years. James enjoyed woodworking, camping and playing golf. He loved his special four-legged friend, Daisy-Mae. James was a devoted husband, father and loving grandfather. He will be greatly missed, but we rejoice in the hope of seeing him again in Heaven. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Hebron Quesenberry, the Rev. Jimmy Cannaday and Calvin Hawley officiating. Interment to follow in the Red Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Maberry Funeral Home, Inc. on April 17, 2012.5

Born in Floyd County, Clyde served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a charter member of the Vinton Church of the Brethren, which he assisted in physically building, a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years and awarded Deacon Emeritus. Clyde worked for the Roanoke Redevelopment Housing Authority before leaving to establish Valley Enterprises. Clyde was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker and his moldings, mantels and furniture pieces grace many area businesses and homes. He was also an avid genealogist and served as a resource for many seeking information on Southwest Virginia and was known lovingly to the Floyd Listserv as "jist ole' clyde". Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and W. Laola Maxey. He is survived by his wife of 57½ years, Velta Akers Maxey. He is also survived by his sister, Iris Maxey DeWilde, Eureka, Illinois; his four children, James (Billy) Maxey, Greely, Colorado, Wayne Maxey, Fincastle, Teresa Maxey and her husband, Michael White, Richmond, and Karen S. Bell, and her husband, Rock, Newport News; granddaughters, Kristina Maxey and fiance Jeffrey Waddell, Veronica Wright and her husband, Michael; two great-grandchildren, Kiara Bailey and Christian Wright; two nephews, John and Michael DeWilde. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2004, from the Vinton Church of the Brethren by Pastor Chris Foster and Pastor Bradley Delaney, and Pastor Danny Walls. Burial to follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Clyde wished donations be made to the Vinton Church of the Brethren, 711 Dale Avenue, Vinton, Virginia, 24179 or the American Lung Association. An active servant of the community, Iris was a member of the Eureka Women’s Club, the Twentieth Century Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Eureka Community Hospital Service League, and the P.E.O. She was a member of the Eureka United Methodist church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 2, at her church. The Reverend Ronald Martz officiated. Burial followed at Roanoke Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Methodist Hospice. on September 15, 2005.6
