     James Washington Hardy was buried at University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium, Charlottesville, Virginia.3 He James Hardy enlisted in Company I, 18th Virginia Infantry, on April 24, 1861. He fought at First Manasses and died in a Charlottesville hospital of typhoid fever on August 27, 1861 while en route from Manasses Junction to Lynchburg. James and his best friend, Samuel Abbott, enlisted in the Confederate Army at the same time. James made Samuel promise that if he did not return from the war that Samuel would take care of Lydia and "Little Bet." James died during the war and after the war Samuel returned and married Lydia and raised Bet as his own. From Court Records - Pittsylvania Co. Book 46, page 235, Nov 18, 1861 "On the motion of Wm. R. Yates who made oath and with James Hodnett as his security who made oath to his sufficiency entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of two hundred dollars conditioned according to law. He Enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 24, 1861, in Company I of the 18th Virginia Infantry. His occupation was listed as farmer. He was absent due to illness from May to August, 1861 and from November, 1861 until February, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal in May, 1862 and to 3rd Sergeant on June 1, 1864. Records show that he was present through December, 1864 which was the last time a complete roster was made for the 18th Virginia. He was born on March 17, 1835 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.1 He married Lousia T. Dunman on December 20, 1860 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. William Thomas Yates married Amanda H. Almeda's unwavering dedication as a retired nurse, caregiver, gardener, prayer warrior/intercessor, and humble servant touched the lives of many. Almeda's heart overflowed with a genuine spirit of service, extending her kindness and compassion to all those around her. Throughout her career as a nurse, she selflessly cared for others, offering comfort and healing. In her role as a caregiver, she provided support and assistance to those in need, embodying the essence of empathy and love. Almeda's green thumb and passion for gardening brought beauty and tranquility to her surroundings, a testament to her nurturing nature. A devoted prayer warrior and intercessor, Almeda fervently lifted the needs of others to the heavens. Her faith was unwavering, and her dedication to her relationship with God was a source of strength and inspiration. Almeda's impact extended beyond her immediate family, as she served as a guiding light in her church and community. Her steadfast commitment to her beliefs and her role as a humble servant left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Almeda was preceded in death by her father, Elinos Alton Whitlock, Sr., her mother, Estella Jackson Yeatts Whitlock, and her siblings, Elinos Alton Whitlock II, Robert Lincoln Whitlock, Clyde Marlyn Whitlock, Lewis Arthur Whitlock, and Ollie Martha Whitlock. She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard David Conner, and her siblings, Donny Dale Whitlock, Perry Lee Whitlock, Sr. (wife Candy), Rebekah Whitlock Kinsley, and Joe David Whitlock, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Almeda Jackson Whitlock Conner will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, her servant's heart, and her unwavering dedication to her family, church, and community. She was a member of the Grace Trinity Church, Buena Vista and held several public jobs in Roanoke County and also in Buena Vista. After her marriage to Paul she moved from Roanoke County to Buena Vista and worked while Paul was serving in World War II. Her last place of employment was Bernson Silk Mills. Left to cherish her memories are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Barbara and Paul Majors Sr., and Darlene and Robert Sloan all of Buena Vista; four beloved grandchildren and their spouses, James and Marlene Shafer, Amy and Chad Huffman, Tammy Shafer and Paul and Dawn Majors Jr. She was to be the great-grandmother of two precious children to be born in September and December. Also surviving are a sister, Ruby Gibson of Roanoke; and two brothers, Howard Conner of Montvale, and Douglas Conner of Clarksville, Tenn; a special friend and companion Dottie Lynn; and a devoted nephew, Richard Garrett, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Burial to follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. on May 14, 1999.3

Conner; two sons and daughter-in-law, Elmer A. and Roberta L. Conner, Franklin Co., John Edward "Eddie" Conner, Blacksburg; two daughters and son-in-law, Ruth E. and Mike E. Hawkins, Roanoke, Nancy C. Linkous, Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Susan L. Bell, David Linkous, Dallas Richards, and Andrew Conner; two great- granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Bell; three brothers, Howard Conner, James Conner both of Roanoke, Douglas Conner, Clarksville, Tenn; two sisters, Annie Huffman, Buena Vista, Ruby Gibson, Roanoke. Burial will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. on August 12, 1994.3
