     Mary Ann Taylor was buried at Captain Shelton's Burial Ground, Rt. 683, in the rear of the Emory Amos farm, Patrick Co., Virginia.¹ She was born on November 30, 1839 at Henry Co., Virginia.^1,2 She married Richard Davis "Little" Yates, son of John Yeardley Yates and Elizabeth Feline Lipford, on September 27, 1864 at Patrick Co., Virginia.^1,3,2 As of September 27, 1864,her married name was Yates.² Mary Ann Taylor Mary Ann Yates purchased from M. V. Steadman for the sum of one thousand and fifty dollars a parcel of land on Church Street immediately below the Methodist Church and continuing for 118 feet. Mr. Steadman was to put on the lot a two story house 16 ft. by 40 ft. with hail, all necessary doors and windows and a porch. on October 19, 1887.¹ She left a will on October 24, 1888 at Patrick Co., Virginia; Will of Mary Ann Yates "In the name of God, amen, I Mary Ann Yeatts of the Town of Stuart in the County of Patrick and State of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory, Blessed be almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my last Will, and Testament, first I direct that my body be decently interred in the family burying ground at Capt. Thos. Shelton according to the rites and ceremonies of the primitive Baptist Church, and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life, Second I will my house and lot with all my household and kitchen furnature, one organ, one mule, one horse wagon and harness, and my Saddle to be equally divided between my three youngest children Emma H., Theodore D. and Richard T. Yeatts. Third I do nominate and appoint my dear husband Richard D. Yeatts to be the executor of this my last will and Testament. Witness my hand and Seal this 24th day of Oct. 1888. M. A.      Timothy Allen Sowder SHAWSVILLE - Timothy "Timmy" Allen Sowder, age 20, died August 23, 1986. He is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Barbara Sowder, Shawsville; one sister, Miss Donna Sowder, Shawsville; two brothers, Terry Sowder and Rodney Sowder, both of Shawsville; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Iva Sowder, Check; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lucille Gunter, Shawsville. Arrangements by Grant E. Bryant Funeral Home, Elliston.³ He Shawsville man killed in crash. A motorcyclist was killed Saturday night in a head-on collision with a van in Montgomery County. The Montgottlery County Sheriff's Department said Timothy Allen Sowder, 20, of Shawsville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Driver of the van was Donnie Davis, also of Shawsville. The accident happened about 9:20 p.m. on Virginia 637 in the Alleghany Springs section of the county. Police said the accident was still under investigation Sunday.⁵ He was buried at Piedmont Cemetery, Rt. 11 to Shawsville, turn at nursing home, Rt. 637, about 8 miles on the left, Montgomery Co., Virginia.¹ He was born on June 22, 1966.^1,2 He died on August 23, 1986 at age 20.^1,2,3

     Her Social Security Number was 229-56-7605.⁹ Joyce Marie Vest was buried at Curlew Hills Cemetery, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Co., Florida.^5,10 She was born on May 13, 1944 at Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,9,3,4 She married Daniel Richard "Danny" Sowder, son of Frank Lewis Sowder and Iva Vest, on June 9, 1962 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2 As of June 9, 1962,her married name was Sowder. Joyce Marie Vest and Daniel Richard "Danny" Sowder were divorced on October 3, 1980 at Floyd Co., Virginia.¹¹ Joyce Marie Vest died on February 14, 2007 at New Port Richey, Pasco Co., Florida, at age 62.^5,9 She New Port Ritchey, Florida - Joyce Vest Sowder passed away at her home in Florida. Her funeral and burial were at Curlew Hills in Palm Harbor, Florida on February 14th. A native of Floyd County, she had just recently retired and moved Florida to be near her daughters. She was a graduate of Check School and had attended classes at Roanoke Community College. She worked most of her life in retail including owning her own store for many years. She was always ready to travel and moved several times to be near her daughters or family members that might need her help. She had been working part-time for Bealls Outlet and had just accepted a managerial position with them. Joyce was a devoted Mom and Granny and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Irene Vest, and her brother Aldo. She is survived by her sisters, Ann Young of Floyd, Pat Scott of Monroe Ga., Cathy Yates of Clearwater Fl., her two daughters, Susan Gray of Moneta Virginia and Karan Moore of Palm Harbor, Florida. She had 5 grandchildren. on March 1, 2007.⁵

     Robert Lee "Pa Dad" Conner was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^11,5,4 He was born on September 10, 1869 at Floyd Co., Virginia; His gravestone has a birth date of Sep 6, 1869.^12,6,10,5 He married Mary Byar Yates, daughter of William Anthony Yeatts and Mary Henry Terry Yates, on April 25, 1889 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^6,12,4 Robert Lee "Pa Dad" Conner died on January 24, 1949 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 79.^12,5,4

     Thomas C. "Tom" Pigg was buried at Mills, Carter, Anderson, Pigg Cemetery, Claudville, Patrick Co., Virginia.⁷ He Thomas served in Company D, 38th Regiment of Virginia volunteers and was wounded in the May 3, 1862 Civil War battle at Richmond, Virginia. Lost his mind and spent 2 years in insane asylum.^8,5 He was born on October 20, 1837 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.⁷ He began military service on June 1, 1861 at Whitmell, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, Enlisted in the Confederate Army.⁴ He married Susan Jane Yates, daughter of John Yeardley Yates and Elizabeth Feline Lipford, on September 13, 1866 at Patrick Co., Virginia.^9,2,3,6 Thomas C. "Tom" Pigg died on April 6, 1905 at Bateman, Patrick Co., Virginia, at age 67.^7,3

     Edward Eugene "Eddie" Davis was buried at Piedmont Cemetery, Rt. 11 to Shawsville, turn at nursing home, Rt. 637, about 8 miles on the left, Montgomery Co., Virginia.⁵ He was born on February 27, 1942 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.^1,3,5 He married Frances Geraldine Sowder, daughter of Frank Lewis Sowder and Iva Vest, on June 14, 1965 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,3 Edward Eugene "Eddie" Davis died on February 21, 2002 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 59.⁵ He DAVIS, Edward Eugene, 59, of Shawsville, Va., passed away Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the Salem V.A. Hospital. He is preceded in death by to children, Edward Eugene Davis, Jr. and Edward Eugene Davis, III, his father, Charles H. Davis. He was born February 27, 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include a loving and devoted mother, Opal C. Davis, Shawsville; daughter, Cindi Burks (Anthony), Check, Va; son, Edward Dean Davis, Shawsville; grandson, Dylan Burke; brother, Charles A.      Johnnie Lee Raines Johnnie Lee Raines, 63, of McCoy, Va., died Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Lewis Gale Medical Center. He was born in Norfolk, Va. on September 25, 1956. He was preceded in death by his father, John Raines; daughter, Julie Early Tomlinson. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn P. Raines; sons, Chuck Early and wife, Donna, Bradley Early and Krista Miller; grandchildren, Cheyenne Marie Tomlinson, Katie Early, Zack Early; one sister, Connie, three brothers, Lonnie, Donnie, Ronnie, several nieces and nephews and other family members.² He was born on September 25, 1956 at Norfolk, Virginia.^1,2 He married Barbara Ann Sowder, daughter of Frank Lewis Sowder and Iva Vest, on January 1, 1976 at Shawsville, Montgomery Co., Virginia.¹ Johnnie Lee Raines and Barbara Ann Sowder were divorced on April 7, 1978.¹ Johnnie Lee Raines died on November 26, 2019 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 63.²

Maxey bought from H. E. Gardner, Shawsville, Va a burial case for his wife, Lydia Conner Maxey ,on Jan 6 1913 paying $20. When he died Nov. 7, 1914 the cost of a burial case from the same company had went up $2."      Wilda Louise Dickerson was buried at Piedmont Cemetery, Rt. 11 to Shawsville, turn at nursing home, Rt. 637, about 8 miles on the left, Montgomery Co., Virginia.^3,6 She was born on September 4, 1926 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.^2,3,4,6 She married Charles Hampton "Charlie" "Hamp" Vest, son of Albert Washington Vest and Wilda Archester McNeil, on December 28, 1946 at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.^{7,2,10,11,3,5,6} As of December 28, 1946,her married name was Vest.³ Wilda Louise Dickerson died on May 7, 2023 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 96.³ She Louise Dickerson Vest, 96 of Floyd County, went to be with the Lord on May 7, 2023 surrounded by family. She was born on September 4, 1926 to Clarence and Elsie Dickerson. She was the beloved wife of Charlie "Hamp" Hampton Vest whom she now has joined in heaven. She was greeted in her heavenly home by so many including her parents, siblings and two daughters, Peggy Bott and Tammy Hiatt. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kathy (Haden) Dulaney; son, Kevin Vest; special daughters, Kimberly (Brandon) DeVault and Rebecca Gillespie. Additionally left to miss her are her grandchildren, Brad (Kimberly) Dulaney, Angie (Barry) LeNoir, Wayne Gillespie, Amanda (Matt) Anthony, Justin Gillespie, Kimberly (Brandon) DeVault, Rebecca Gillespie, Zach Vest, Douglas Gillespie, TJ Lunsford; many great-grandchildren; and many friends that became family. After graduating from Shawsville High School, she went to work at Southern Dairies. While traveling to work on the bus in 1946, she met the love of her life, whom she married on December 28, 1946 and spent 70 years together. One of many pastimes she enjoyed was playing basketball. She played every year at Shawsville High School as well as many years on an independent team for Check Elementary at the age of 47 and many more enjoying cheering others on. She had been caretaker to many over her lifetime including adopting four children, raising two grandchildren and she took care of both her parents until they passed. She cared for many others whom she mentored each summer until the adoption of her four children. She has affected the lives of so many people in this area, not only as a Sunday School teacher of many years at Piedmont Methodist Church and Crockett Springs UMC. She was the treasure of Crockett Springs UMC for over 16 years, overseeing the construction of the new church and continuing to help as a founding member of Crockett Spring UMC throughout her lifetime. Additionally she touched the lives of many children working in the cafeteria for 15 years at Shawsville Elementary, including several years when she managed the cafeteria. One of her most cherished accomplishments was advancing her way thru the chapters of the Eastern Star and leading to the title of Worthy Matron, inducting many others into it as she went on. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for the wonderful care they have provided these last few months. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Dickerson and two sons, Coy and Eugene Dickerson. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Opal Dickerson, Nathalie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Hampton Vest, Edna Mae and James Lee Sheppard, all of Check; one brother, Jesse Worrell, Shawsville; eight sisters, Alberta Kelly, Princeton, W.Va., Clara Mae Hale, Christiansburg, Ocie Conner, Shawsville, Ethel Mc Peak, Pilot, Bessie Stevens, Elliston, Dorothy Keaton, Pipestem, W.Va., Willie Hill, Salem, and Mildred Barnett, Bradenton, Fla; four sisters-in-law, Monnie StClair, Opal Doss, Hattie Aaron and Edna Worrell; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 1995, at the Crockett Springs United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Dickerson, the Rev. Tom Oliphant and the Rev. Those left to cherish her memory are her father and mother, Hampton and Louise Vest of Check; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Haden Dulaney of Floyd, Tammy and Donnie Hiatt of Martinsville; brother Kevin Vest; two special sisters, Kim and Becky Gillespie; and special aunt, Edna Mae Sheppard. Peggy was a member of Crockett Springs United Methodist Church in Shawsville and loved all of her church family. Her smiling face and courageous nature will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
