Born on Nov. 4, 1930 in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late R. B. and Clara B. Wheby Conner. She received her degree in nursing from Bluefield State College in 1974 and begun her passionate roll as “Nurse Betty.” Her nursing career included being Director of Nursing for Glenwood Methodist Home, an OB/GYN nurse for several doctors and as a surgical nurse at Princeton Community Hospital where she retired as nurse supervisor in 1992 with 11 years of dedicated service. Even after retiring, she volunteered at the hospital. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton since 1968, where she was active within her church and enjoyed learning the gospel. Betty married James C. Sparks on July 27, 1958 and was a devoted wife. She was a good and loving mother and daughter. Her family was her most prized achievement, and she was always there to support and love them. Together they raised four wonderful, successful children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Sparks on November 5, 2008; and one sister, Dolly Josephine Conner. Survivors include her children, Steven Statler of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Marc Statler and wife Almira of Roanoke, Va., Jim Sparks and wife Kim of Louisville, Ky. and June Strow and husband Michael of Powder Springs, Ga; grandchildren, Christine and Allison Statler, Nicole and Brittney Sparks, Jonathan and Alexandra Strow, Kristie Smith and husband Ian and Heather Johnson and husband Nathan; siblings, Jeanette Casey of Princeton, Kenneth Conner and wife Lou of Pedro Island, Fla., Phyllis Posey and husband Jim of Princeton, and Clara Lee Mullin and husband Jack of Yulee, Fla; special friends, Mike and Jody Saffell and Eric and Pam Stephenson. A celebration of Betty's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 11, 2011 from the First Baptist Church on Mercer Street in Princeton with Dr. David Dockery officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.      Kenneth George "Ken" Conner was born on March 19, 1933 at Roanoke, Virginia.5,1,3,4 He married Verna Louise "Lou" Whittaker, daughter of Joseph Vohn Whittaker and Ethel Alene Fain, on May 14, 1954 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.5,1,3 Kenneth George "Ken" Conner died on June 10, 2018 at Charlotte Co., Florida, at age 85.4 He Surrounded by family, Kenneth George Conner of Placida, Florida passed away at 85 years of age on Sunday the 10th of June, 2018. Kenneth lived a good life filled with love, happiness and good health. It was only in the last year that his battle with cancer took its toll. Kenneth will be remembered by his loving smile, rich laughter and compassion for everyone he met. Ken was born in Roanoke, Virginia to Clara Bena Wheby and R. B. Conner and moved to Princeton, WV as a young lad. He serviced in the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict and returned to make Princeton his home. He was a member of the Elks Club, founded the Princeton Boxing Club and the Princeton Swim Team, served as the President of the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association. He was a salesman for Moore Business Forms for many years before opening his own business, Conner Instant Printing. Ken was very involved in rescuing, deprogramming and rehabilitating young people who were victims of the Cult movement. He lectured and educated people around the country about mind-control and helped nearly two hundred families reunite with their children. Kenneth and his wife also built a summer home on Claytor Lake (Dublin), VA where family and friends created many cherished memories. Since their retirement Ken and his wife spend their time between their home on Don Pedro Island, FL & Claytor Lake, VA. Kenneth is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Verna Louise Conner and his sisters, Phyllis Posey of Princeton, WV and Clara Lee Mullin of Yulee, FL. His surviving children are Kenneth G. Conner, Jr. (Leila Ewin) of New Orleans, LA, Cheryl Conner Pressly (Russell) of Englewood, FL, Rodney B. Conner of Winston-Salem, NC and Mitchell D. Conner (Kim Billings) of Chesapeake, VA along with 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Kenneth was preceded in death by his sisters Jeanette Casey and Betty Sparks both of Princeton, WV and his children Gregory B. Conner (Kathy Conner) of Greenville, SC and Barbara Louise Conner of Rotonda West, FL on June 14, 2018.4

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer J. and Effie Cole Conner; husband, William "Bill" Bauman; father-in-law, William Bauman Sr; and nephew, Michael Conner and wife, Jane. Mrs. Bauman was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Debbie Vaden and husband, Richard, of Roanoke, and Dana Horan and husband, Christopher, of Fincastle; grandchildren, Kara Marks, Marla Turner, and Haleigh Horan; great-grandchildren, Taya and Melody Marks; brother, Edsel Conner and wife, Doris; mother-in-law, Vergie Bauman; sister-in-law, Pat Sledd and husband, Mike, all of Roanoke; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends too numerous to mention. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018. Weather permitting, funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. Darryl G. Crim and the Rev. Sandra Conner. Barbara Darlene Hale was born on April 4, 1938 at Roanoke, Virginia.5,7 As of July 6, 1991,her married name was Kessler.11 She married Billie West "Bill" Kessler Sr. on July 6, 1991 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,11 Barbara Darlene Hale and Billie West "Bill" Kessler Sr. were divorced on July 28, 2009 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.6 Barbara Darlene Hale died on October 27, 2021 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 83.5 She Barbara H. Hinchee, 83, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. Born on April 4, 1938, in Roanoke, Barbara grew up in Garden City and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956. She was happily married to J.H. for 33 years until lung cancer took him in 1988. As the secretary at Mount Pleasant Elementary School for over thirty years, Barbara developed many long-term friendships among the faculty and staff as well as the rest of the Mount Pleasant community. She was a devoted member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where she attended faithfully with her church family. Barbara was the widow of James Herbert (J.H.) Hinchee Jr. and was also preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Hale; mother, Uray Hale; and brother, Wayne Hale. Our Mom felt very blessed to have such a dedicated and loving family and we felt very fortunate to have her unconditional love and devotion. She was known as Mamaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind three daughters, Pam Gordon (Dennis), Donna Harber (Ken), and Tammy Cook (Brian); six grandchildren, Derick Vaden, Dustin Vaden (Stephanie), Adam Gordon (Leslie), Megan Holloway (Ryan), Tyler Cook, and Jamie Wilson (Josh); eight great-grandchildren, Evie, Olivia, and Pearl Gordon, Gabriel, Lachlan, and Everett Wilson, and Marshall and Channing Holloway; a special sister-in-law, Rowena Hale; along with many special friends and cousins. The family would like to thank caregivers, Tina and Pam, for their wonderful help and support during this difficult time. on October 28, 2021.5
