His Social Security Number was 233-32-5002.6 Jack Dempsey Burlingame was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.7 He was born on October 20, 1924 at South Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.6,7 He married Sara Lou Van Meter on June 9, 1956 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.3,7,8 Jack Dempsey Burlingame died on March 29, 2010 at Ravenswood, Jackson Co., West Virginia, at age 85.6,7 He Jack Dempsey Burlingame, 85, of Ravenswood died at his home on March 29, 2010, with his wife at his side. He was born on October 20, 1924, in South Charleston. He attended Charleston schools, graduated from Morris Harvey College on the GI Bill 1949-1952, and was named in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1946 in the 27th Regiment 5th Marine Division. He was the first member of occupation forces of the Sasebo Japan on the island of Kyushu and also served on Iwo Jima. Burlingame was employed by C&P Telephone Company of West Virginia before enlisting in the Marines, so he returned to this job after his military service. He was employed by C&P for 38 years before retiring in April 1981. At retirement, Burlingame was marketing manager for the state of West Virginia. After a five-year period as a farmer, raising beef on 82 acres in Jackson County and building a log home, Burlingame returned to the business world in 1985 as executive director for the Jackson County Development Authority. Burlingame committed his considerable experience to facilitating the successful merging of the needs of the business and industrial community with the offerings of courses at Jackson County Community College. This partnership has become a model often repeated throughout the state and region. For his considerable guidance and support to the West Virginia University Ripley campus, Burlingame was conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on May 17, 2003. During his employment by the Jackson County Development Authority, Burlingame envisioned an industrial park which became a reality when the JCDA purchased 157 acres in Jackson County, some of which bordered the Ohio River. During the next 17 years, Burlingame recruited 12 industrial/manufacturing facilities in the industrial park. His vision into the future became even more of a reality with the addition of rail service in the park. Perhaps the greatest of his visions was the establishment of an inland port in the Jackson County Maritime & Industrial Centre. This remains the only district inland port in the state of West Virginia. During his employment at JCDA, Burlingame donated much of his time to mentoring other counties and teaching other developers and entrepreneurs to reach for the stars and to be unafraid to try new approaches in the development fields. He envisioned a new regional airport in Jackson County and diligently pursued this avenue of development. Burlingame was very aggressive in making improvements to the Jackson County general aviation airport. Burlingame retired from JCDA in 2002 after 17 years employment. A year-and-a-half later, he returned as interim director until a permanent director could be hired. Since retiring from JCDA, Burlingame undertook the task of executive director of the Blue & Gray Intermodal Highway Authority. As such, Burlingame was striving to establish a highway linkage between I-77 and I-79. Six West Virginia counties are involved in this endeavor: Jackson, Roane, Calhoun, Gilmer, Braxton and Lewis. The goal of the Blue & Gray Intermodal Highway Authority is to strengthen the economy of the six-county area by creating an intermodal transportation system. Burlingame has worked on this since 2003, and great strides have been made. His past activities and honors include past Frozen Camp Young Adult Farmers, past president and vice president of the Jackson County Junior Fair (he planned and completed largest construction activities ever attempted), president of Phi Sigma Phi fraternity, president and board member of Camp Fire Girls Huntington Council, president of West Virginia Telephone Pioneers, past director for the state of West Virginia for the Southern Economic Development Council, past president of the WVEDC, having service three terms as president of the West Virginia Economic Development Council, former member of Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council Board of Directors and Finance Committee, former member of the Board of Advisors of WVU-P Jackson County Center, was appointed to Forest Management Review Commission by Gov. Gaston Caperton and re-appointed by Governor Cecil H. Underwood, appointed member of the West Virginia Port Authority Board of Directors by Governor Robert Wise, attained District Port Authority status for Jackson County Industrial Centre and Foreign Trade Sub Zone status, the first inland port in the state of West Virginia, attained Certified Business Location distinction for Jackson County, the second in the state to do this, member of Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, member of Ripley Chamber of Commerce, later an honorary life member, organized and became a member of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Economic Advisory Committee for the West Virginia Regional Airport, a member of the board of directors of the West Virginia Development Office Community & Economic Development Council, an honorary member the Pilot Club of Jackson County; an honorary chapter member of the Future Farmers of America-Ripley Chapter, a board member of the Buckskin Council-Boy Scouts of America, chairman of Explorer Scouts, Jackson Star News Shining Star Award as "Citizen of the Year", West Virginia Business Developer of the Year, the first one to be honored WVEDC, guest professor at WVU-Parkersburg, for Economic Development, was named Distinguished West Virginian by Governor Cecil H. Alexander Carlton "Alex" Lawrence1,2,3

M, b. April 8, 1875, d. July 15, 1925
Alexander Carlton "Alex" Lawrence and Ida May Poff were divorced.4 Alexander Carlton "Alex" Lawrence was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.2 He was born on April 8, 1875 at Kanawha Co., West Virginia.1,2,3 He married Ida May Poff, daughter of William Anderson Poff and Talitha Cumi Scott, on December 20, 1895 at Fayette Co., West Virginia.1,5,6 Alexander Carlton "Alex" Lawrence married Nellie Unknown before 1920.7 Alexander Carlton "Alex" Lawrence died on July 15, 1925 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 50.2,6 He A. C. Lawrence, Prominent Local Oil and Gas Operator Shot to Death By Uncle Who Says He Was Fleeced. Tragedy Occurs in Victim's Office in Bank Building During Mid-Afternoon; 68-Year-Old Slayer Fired Seven Shots. Slain Man Well Known In State. Assailant Surrenders, Asserting He Had Been Avenged; Shooting Follows Brief Verbal Exchange Between Two. Family differences and years of brooding on the part of an uncle who believed he had been robbed of his property, led yesterday afternoon to the fatal shooting of Alexander C. Lawrence, 1612 1/2 Quarrier street, for many years a prominent oil and gas operator of the state. William A. DeJournatt, 68-year-old gray-haired resident of Boone county, shot and killed his nephew in the later's office, located on the sixth floor of the Kanawha Banking & Trust Company building, the fatal shot being fired in mid-afternoon when Capitol street, on which the building faces, was filled with traffic. "My life was unsatisfactory and he was the cause of it." the aged uncle later told police, at the same time admitting he had gone to his nephew's office with 'the Intention of killing him and declaring that if it were to be done again he would do it. After he had fired seven shots into the body of Lawrence he walked into another office occupied by C. J. Bumpus, business associate of the slain man and the only eyewitness to the fatality, and said: "I did it and here's my card." On the card he gave his nephew's associate was printed: "Through rascality I have lost my land, all that I have. In order to keep out of the poorhouse I am trying to vet money to redeem it. What will you give? Any amount will be gladly received and appreciated." The nephew was shot down as he grappled with his uncle in offices occupied by the Lawrence Oil & Gas company and other companies in which Mr. Lawrence was an official. Uncle and nephew had exchanged only a few words before the shots rang out, according to Mr. Bumpus, who, after having been introduced to the uncle, had retired to an adjoining office room to permit Mr. Lawrence and his uncle to transact their business. This is the only way I know to settle it," Bumpus told police he heard the aged man say, at the same time drawing a pistol and firing. Both men were standing at the time and as Lawrence grappled with his assailant more shots rang out. The nephew fell to the floor of his office and the uncle, replacing the gun in his coat walked into the office where Mr. Bumpus was trying to get into telephone communication with the police. He paced the office until police arrived, and offered no resistance as he was relieved of his gun and led, a bent old man with nothing to say, to the sidewalk where he and two officers stood practically unnoticed until the police patrol arrived. Not until one hour later, when he was brought into the office of Police Captain Dan Smith to be questioned, did the aged uncle break his silence and his first words were: "I am satisfied, all I want is a fair and honest trial, and I will tell everything then." "He beat me out of my lands, and I was aggravated into doing it." the aged man declared. "He stole the papers from the court house, but I can prove title to the property. I have always been a law-abiding citizen, have never harmed any man, but I was aggravated into doing this." He said his nephew had gained control of a 40-acre tract of land in Boone county near Seth which now has eight or nine wells producing 40 barrels each. This control was gained, he said, in 1919 and oil was struck the next year. "When asked if he had gone to the office of his nephew with the intention of killing him the uncle replied: "I won't deny it," and declared when asked if he would do it again that he would. In reply to a question from Captain Smith, he said he had not warned his nephew he was going to kill him, and admitted he had been brooding for a number of years, finally deciding that the action he took yesterday was "the best way out." The uncle served in the United States army during the Spanish-American war with the Fourth Ohio volunteers. He refused to tell where he had secured the pistol with which he did the shooting. An inquest was held last night at the Simpson undertaking parlors by County Coroner M. D. Good. A verdict was returned saying that A. C. Lawrence met death from bullet wounds inflicted by William A. DeJournatt, C. J. Bumpus, eye-witness to the shooting, gave the only testimony, which was substantially the same story he told police when they arrived on after the fatal shots had been fired. According to Bumpus, DeJournatt came to the office of Mr. Lawrence about 1:10 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was greeted by Mr. Lawrence with the words, "Hello, Uncle Bill, go in and take a chair, I will be through here in a few minutes." At that time Mr. Lawrence had a number of visitors in his office. The uncle, walked into the room in which Mr. Bumpus was working, but declined to take a chair. He paced the floor, Mr. Bumpus said, and walked out into tbe corridor of the building several times. When he was invited into the office of Mr. Lawrence he again declined to sit down but when introduced to Mr. Bumpus walked to one end of an office desk and shook hands, after which Mr. Bumpus went into another office, leaving the uncle and nephew standing at the end of the desk. Mr. Bumpus said he heard them say something about land and the uncle say "this is tho only way I know to settle it." after which the shots rang out and he saw Mr. Lawrence grapple with the aged man. Mr. Bumpus then closed the door between the two offices, thinking DeJournatt had lost his mind, and attempted to call police. After seven shots rang out the slayer tapped on the door, entered and presented the card on which he asked for contributions to aid him in "redeeming his land." Police Officer E. N. Shuck and O. B. Little were attracted to the scene of the shooting. Police Captain Dan Smith and Bertillon Inspector George Blessing were summoned and arrived while DeJournatt, the gun still under his coat bosom, was standing in the hall near the office. Not until he had been taken to the police station did it become generally known that a murder had been committed in the bank building. When the aged man was taken from the building to the police patrol there were few persons who noticed the aged man walking between two police officers, and it was not until later that a crowd had gathered to watch the body of Mr. Lawrence carried out by undertakers. Information available to police yesterday was that the shooting was the climax of a land argument involving property once belonging to the DeJournatt estate which had been leased by the Lawrence Oil company. It is understood that a difference of opinion as to the title off the land exists among various members of the family. Mrs. William Cooper, of Kanawha City, and Miss Alice Williams, of Brooks street, are nieces of DeJournatt. Funeral services had not been arranged last night for Mr. Lawrence. The victim of DeJournntt's shots started working in coal mines of Kanawha county at the age of nine years. He continued at the work until he was 22 years old, with the exception of three years spent on his grandfather's farm. He was born April 8, 1875, near Malden, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. John Lawrence. His schooling was received when the mines were not running and by studying at night. On January 1, 1897, he became deputy clerk of the circuit and criminal courts of Kanawha county, serving two terms in this capacity. He entered the hotel business in August, 1899, by assuming control of the Hotel Washburn, which was located on Capitol street opposite the post office. Three years later he and S. W. Staunton purchased the Ventura hotel at Ashland, Ky., and started construction of the Kanawha hotel, which was opened in April, 1904. He was also interested in completing and opening the Fleetwood hotel in 1909. He entered the oil business in 1912 and has since become one of the leading officials in the Eagler Oil and Gas company, Lawrence Oil and Gas company, King Oil company, Little Oil company, Oilville Gasoline company, Little Gasoline company and the Laing Oil company. His holdings are in Kanawha, Clay, Lincoln and Boone counties. Mr. Lawrence was married in 1905 to Miss Ida Mae Poff, who is now dead. One daughter, Mabel Faun, was born to this union. In 1913 he married Miss Nellie R. Martin. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and had presided as superintendent of the Union Mission Sunday school. on July 16, 1925.6
