Archie Thornton was proud to serve in the Marine Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, and was honorably discharged November 1945, when he returned home to marry his beloved "Ginny". His Marine Corp service and family remained his pride and joy. As a machinist he worked for Panther Coal Company, Knox Creek Coal Company, and Roanoke Iron and Bridge Co. He served as a Boy Scout leader, was a member of the Masons, enjoyed bowling, gardening, back yard birding and above all else, waterskiing on Claytor Lake. "Once a Marine, always a Marine." on August 29, 2013.7
