He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Virginia Lester Thornton; and granddaughter, Heather Leigh Thornton. He is survived by his children, Bill (Janet), Brenda Gess (the Rev. John), Mary Kane (Steve), Vicki Clark (Bruce), and Mark (Diane); 15 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, Madeline Thornton, of Morgantown, W.Va; and many nieces and nephews. Gunnery Sgt. Archie Thornton was proud to serve in the Marine Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theatre, and was honorably discharged November 1945, when he returned home to marry his beloved "Ginny". His Marine Corp service and family remained his pride and joy. As a machinist he worked for Panther Coal Company, Knox Creek Coal Company, and Roanoke Iron and Bridge Co. He served as a Boy Scout leader, was a member of the Masons, enjoyed bowling, gardening, back yard birding and above all else, waterskiing on Claytor Lake. "Once a Marine, always a Marine." on August 29, 2013.7

He was a member of the West Virginia Education Association and National Education Association and was the West Virginia representative to the National Federation of High School Directors of Athletics. Surviving in addition to his mother are his widow, Mrs. Mary Madeline Winter Thornton; one son, Samuel R. Thornton of the home; one brother, A. T. Thornton of Troutville, Va; and two sisters, Mrs. E. F. (Fleta) Talbot of Grundy, Va., and Mrs. Al (Minnie Lou) Snider of Salem, Va. She cared for many elderly people in her home for many years. She enjoyed working outside with her flowers and canning. She loved her kids and her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Whittaker in January 2013; a brother, Junior Lafferty; several infant brothers and sisters; and one granddaughter. Survivors include six children, Ted O'Dell Thomas and his wife Patricia of Princeton, Tina Earlean Tignor and her husband Roger of Princeton, Kathey Martin and her husband David of Athens, Teresa Thomas of Palm Bay, FL, Ken Whittaker of Princeton and Bernice Whittaker of Princeton; nine sisters and brothers, Shirley Taylor and her husband Bill of Wiggens, MS, Jackie Nodar and her husband Ray of Clairmont, FL, Carol Bledsoe and her husband Charles of Winston-Salem, NC, Betty Midyette of Jacksonville, FL, Peggy Varnum and her husband Jim of Weirsdale, FL, Tim Lafferty and his wife Sheila of Fountain Inn, SC, Rosa Duff and her husband Ted of Bluefield, Judy Thompson of Kellysville and Randy Lafferty of Bluefield.
