A native of Roanoke, he was a resident of Hampton for 28 years. Mr. Thacker retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service as senior chief petty officer. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He received numerous medals including the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" during the Vietnam conflict. He retired as chief of the engineering resource management division and engineering and housing at Fort Monroe. He was a civil service employee and received the Civilian Army Achievement Award. He retired in 1990 after 21 years of service. Mr. Thacker was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church. He was a member of the board of directors at the Fort Monroe Credit Union and was a member of the Supervisors Committee at Fort Monroe Credit Union and the Naval Fleet Reserve Association. He was born April 25, 1921. A farmer all his life, Jack was also a logger and heavy equipment operator, and employed at Radford Arsenal and Bartlett Tree Experts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert J. and Emma Zetta Huff; brothers, Oakley Huff and wife Reba, Esley Huff and wife Gertrude, Edmond Huff, and Curtis Huff; sister, Gatha Alderman and husband Arnold. Virgie Alice Keith died on May 22, 2017 at Virginia at age 94.¹ She Virgil Keith Huff went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 22, 2017. Born on August 20, 1922, she lived a long, full life surrounded by family and friends. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Virgil was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren, retired from Floyd Garment Company and a hard-working farmer. She was a woman who loved God and served others; strong in spirit, kind, loving, and gentle. Preceded in death by her parents, George and Dorothy Keith; her husband of 65 years, Thurman (Jack) Huff; sister, Beulah Mae Harman; brother, George Keith Jr; son-in-law Lowell Aldridge; daughter-in-law Rebecca Huff; and great-grandchild Alex Dillon. He was a native of Roanoke, Va., but lived in Richmond most of his life. He was a retired employee of Kleen-Rite Co. and a member of the Howard Preston Johnson Thomas Post No. 315, Legion and the United Pentecostal Church. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; his mother, Sally Johnson of Roanoke; one daughter, Clara Sue Orange of Roanoke; three sisters, Pauline Johnson of Roanoke, Effie Haggerty of Washington, D.C., and June Rife of Radford, Va; two stepsons, Earl Rettinger of Connersville and Pat Lathrop of Greenville, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Eloise Jones and Joyce Singleton, both of Richmond; two grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren. on January 5, 1982.⁵
