He was preceded by his parents, Harry Preston and Lena Mae Wickham Wertz; wife, Jean Prillaman Wertz; a brother, Samuel Carson Wertz and an infant great grandchild. Bennie retired from General Electric after decades of service and served for more than 20 years as a Drill Sergeant in the Army Reserve. He was an avid gardener and a fixture at the Salem Farmers Market. There he had many loyal customers and friends. He was a devoted member of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his sons, Stephen Lee Wertz and wife Patricia, David Wayne Wertz and wife Tina; grandchildren, Jason Wertz, Michelle Spencer, Derrick, Justin, Benjamin and Sarah Wertz; twelve great grandchildren, brother, Kenneth (Mac) Wertz; sisters, Betty Yeatts, Helen Fralin and husband Ray, and Doris Alexander. The family would like to offer a very special thank you to the nurses and staff at Kindred At Home and Good Samaritan Hospice for their many acts of kindness and compassion. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Tim Harvey. Interment with military honors will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Simpson Funeral Home. on February 4, 2018.5

Jean was a loyal member of the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren for many years. Her mother, Kathleen Jones, preceded her in death. Surviving are her loving husband of 48 years, Bennie L. Wertz; two sons, Stephen Wertz and wife, Patricia, Bedford County, David Wertz and wife, Tina, Bent Mtn; six grandchildren, Jason, Michelle, Derrick, Justin, Benjamin, Sara; three stepgrandchildren, Steven, Brittany, Josh; four great-grandchildren; her father, Carlton J. "Whitey" Prillaman, Bedford County and a host of other relatives. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren Building Fund or the American Cancer Society in Jean's name. The family would like to give a special thank you to Pastor Ed and the members of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, who gave their time and care for Jean during this difficult time and also to Dr. William Fintel at Lewis-Gale, Good Samaritan Hospice for their caring and support and Dr. Strousburg at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Southern Florida. Chrisman, of Roanoke; sister, Oneta Williams, of Reston, Va; sister-in-law, Clyde Gearheart, of Ferrum; numerous devoted and loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews as well as friends and neighbors of many years. A funeral service will be held at Brookhill Baptist Church, (Bandy Road), Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Dr. Gary Norris and Mr. Frank Ball officiating. Interment in Bandy Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. on March 10, 2003.1

Charles Rufus "Chips" Doyle died on January 11, 2021 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 93.3 He Charles "Chips" Doyle, 93, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021, peacefully at home surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Flo. Chips is survived by his children, Brenda Doyle Tilley and husband, Ken, Cathy Doyle Kibler and husband, David, and Kay Dean Martin and husband, Dan; a brother, Vincent Thomas Doyle and wife, Shirley; grandchildren, Joshua Tilley and wife, Christina, Kristie Tilley Blake and husband, Scott, Lindsey Hamilton and husband, Ryan, Samantha Hill and husband, Josh, Allison Kibler and fiancé, Brian Blankenship, Jared Dean and wife, Brooke, Eli Tilley and wife, Nicole, and Brandon Kibler; and ten soon to be eleven great-grandchildren. Chips proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy, before going into the ministry full-time. After completing seminary, he served as minister of several area Baptist churches and marrying thousands of couples during the course of his career. After retiring from full-time ministry of 65 years, Chips served in part time ministry as a supply pastor/interim pastor for many Baptist churches in the area and for fellow clergy and other denominations. With the current COVID-19 crisis and illness, a celebration of Chip's life will be held at a later date when everyone can gather in person. on January 15, 2021.3
