     Russell Randolph McDaniel Russell Randolph (Mac) McDaniel of Roanoke, Va., passed away in his home on Thursday morning, January 18, 2018, at the age of 95. He was born on May 22, 1922, in Elliston, Va. Russell was the first of six children born to Radie Mae McDaniel and Warren Cleveland McDaniel. He was married for over 68 years to Luella Copley McDaniel. The two enjoyed a loving marriage, and were dedicated to each other’s care and well-being until the time of Luella’s death in 2010. They were active members of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke for many years. Russell had a long career working for the railroad and retired as Manager of Motive Power and Equipment at Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1984. He held a certificate from Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. Russell graduated with a B.A. in Electrical Engineering in 1948 from Virginia Tech, where he attended college on the G.I. Bill after serving in the 103rd Infantry Division in World War II. Russell loved woodworking, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son. Russell was a pillar of quiet strength and stability and a model of principle, integrity, and decency for so many both in and out of his family, and will be very dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luella Copley McDaniel; daughter, Judith McDaniel Wood; brother, Carson McDaniel; and parents, Radie and Warren McDaniel. Russell is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hagood; sons-in-law, Richard Hagood and Thomas Wood; grandchildren, Katherine Wood and Russell Hagood; stepgrandchild, Wesley Wood; brothers, Hastel McDaniel, Douglas McDaniel and Danny McDaniel; and sister, Juanita Seagle. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Home Instead and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for providing such excellent care toward the end of Russell’s life. Extra thanks are due to Cendy Moran, Dorris Bare, Amy Newman, and Carla Weaver. Your dedicated, loving, and compassionate care made his last years immeasurably more comfortable, and was very greatly appreciated by us, and by him. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Oakey’s South Chapel with visitation from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park and the family will receive friends at Russell’s home following the service.3 He was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.3 He was born on May 22, 1922 at Elliston, Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,2,3 He married Louella Copley on July 28, 1942 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,3 Russell Randolph McDaniel died on January 18, 2018 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 95.3

He was born July 17, 1923 in Elliston, Va. to Warren McDaniel and Radie Maxey McDaniel. Mr. McDaniel retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad after 43 years of service. He was most proud of serving in the U.S. Navy, where he was a decorated serviceman on board the U.S.S. Ahrens (DE-575) during World War II, in both Pacific and Atlantic theatres. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Vada McDaniel; his parents and great-granddaughter, Kamryn Anne Bailey. Surviving are two daughters, Dianne McDaniel and Sharon Barrow (husband Jim); granddaughter, Sherry Bailey; grandson, Jeff Ballard; three great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Kathryn, and Kyler Bailey; four brothers, Russell McDaniel, of Roanoke, Va., Hastel McDaniel, of Virginia Beach, Va., Doug McDaniel, of Goode, Va., Danny McDaniel, of Wytheville, Va.; sister, Juanita Seagle, of Wytheville, Va., special neighbors, Jack and Nada Moore; his faithful canines, Lilly and Joey; and numerous family members. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2012, at Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel, with Lead Pastor Anthony Braswell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Kernersville Medical Center for the care given to Mr. McDaniel. on September 9, 2012.4

He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 44 years, Betty Jo Ballard McDaniel; and brothers, Russell R. McDaniel and Carson I. McDaniel. Left to cherish his memory are his dear friend and companion of nearly 27 years, Marybelle "Mitzi" Middleton; daughters, Karen Legg and husband Michael and Betsy Melton and husband Jack; grandchildren, Ryan Legg and wife Magan, Matthew Legg and wife Rikki Merz, Abbey Germain and husband Daniel, and Leslie Bedsole and husband Justin; great-grandchildren, Brentley Delanney, Carley Jo Germain, Adalyn and Graydon Legg, and Casey and Carmen Bedsole; siblings, Juanita Seagle, Doug McDaniel and wife Phyllis, and Danny McDaniel and wife Ellen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thank you to the Sentara Hospice Group and the Seniorcorp for their tender care and assistance during the last weeks of Mac's life. Doug was a Korean war veteran serving in the United States Army. He served the Lord as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed volunteering at the Shepherds Table in Bedford for almost 20 years. He was also a member of the Goode Bedford Ruitan Club. Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Bralley McDaniel; sons, Douglas McDaniel Jr. (Sherrill), and George McDaniel (Kimberly); four precious grandchildren, Megan Yost (Bill) of Colorado, George Jr. of Alexandra, Va., Emilee McDaniel of Roanoke and D.J. III of Goode; sisters, Juanita Seagle of Roanoke; brother, Danny McDaniel (Ellen) of Wytheville, Va; sisters-in-law, Joline BeCraft and Patsy Grubb of Wytheville; eight nieces and four nephews; a host of friends and special golfing buddies, two very special friends, Vic Horton and Bob Plaster, whom were as close as brothers. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. John Boyles officiating. on May 15, 2020.4
