She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Rachel Carter; sisters, Sally Johnson, Roxie Sisson, Effie Abshire and Rachel King; brothers, Morgan Simpson, Robert Simpson and Merdith Simpson. Mourning her passing are her grandson, Glenn Carter and wife, Karen; great-granddaughter, Erica Carter; great-nephew, Bobby Johnson, whom she raised, all of Roanoke; brother, Bill Simpson, of Salem; stepson, Don Craighead, of Vinton; her niece and caretaker, Virginia Mae King Agnew, of Roanoke; 10 nieces and one nephew. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park on September 30, 1999.1

Left to cherish her memory: daughter Connie Gray (Ken); son Barry Agnew (Elizabeth); sister Peggy Adkins; sister-in-law Eleanor Peverall; grandchildren Brian Settles (Kimberly), Kevin Settles, Nikki Agnew, Todd Agnew (Keisha), Philip Agnew (Emily), Chloe Agnew and Josh Agnew; eight great-grandchildren. “Jen” was born on January 31, 1924. Her parents were founding members of Roanoke First Church of the Nazarene where she was an active member since childhood. She held numerous leadership roles at Morningside, Jackson, Rescue Mission and was an Avon representative for 51 years. Known by her grandchildren as MamaJen, her first priority was her family. There was no excuse for missing Sunday dinners and you better go to church. She was truly amazing as a caregiver to family, friends and neighbors. She gave praise and witnessed for Jesus lovingly and firm with no apologies in her life, words and actions.
