The victim, Miss Oakey Mae Conner, received burns over nearly 100 per cent of her body, Floyd County Medical Examiner Dr. F. C. Badsaul said. Dr. Bedsaul said Miss Conner's clothes apparently caught on fire in the morning when she was attempting to build a fire at her home. She lived alone. After the woman's clothing began burning, she apparently ran from the house, the medical examiner said. Miss Conner's body was found in the afternoon by her sister, who lived nearby. Miss Conner lived about a half mile from Check on U.S. 221. on May 9, 1967.13

Restvale Cemetery in Floyd Co., Virginia, was established in the 1950's. on the land of Willard Charles Simpson. He was first person buried there, in 1958. Originally the land was owned by Willard Simpson's mother, Bethanie Frances Conner Simpson, second wife of William Tazewell Simpson. Bethanie inherited the land, estimated to be about 15 acres, from her father, Daniel Conner. Willard Simpson inherited about 9 acres from his mother and the rest went to his sister. Willard had a Country Store and Canning Factory as he also owned several acres of farm land. There was a large mill next to the Canning Factory and was powered by a water wheel. Willard is buried at Salem Church a few miles away. Garnett Eloise Poff died on June 16, 1991 at Check, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 93.8,6,7 She Mrs. Garnett E. Simpson, age 93, of Check died Sunday at her residence. She was the widow of Willard C. Simpson. For many years she and her husband owned and operated a general store and commercial cannery in Check, and were especially known for their "Bent Mountain Brand" Sauerkraut. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Guy (Miriam) Stinchfield, Richmond; Mrs. James (Hilda) Harmon, Floyd; foster son, Johnnie Settles, North Highland, Calif; ten grandchildren including B.P. Simpson Jr. and Willard Charles (Chuck) Simpson, both of Check; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Iris) Aldridge, Copper Hill; Mrs. Hubert (Mary Lou) Harman, Check. Entombment will be in the Simpson Mausoleum in Restvale Cemetery. on June 18, 1991.6
