Oscar (should be Otho) Oliver Holmes, 65, a painting contractor of 816 West Ave. and a lifelong resident of Charleston, died under the wheels of a New York Central freight train Saturday at 10:10 a.m., and Coroner Max Goldman said all indications were that the man deliberately jumped under the train to end his life. The body was found by Mrs. Hazel Ratliff of 521 Roane St., lying on the tracks near where Roane street dead-ends into Madison street. City Police Captain Walter Cavender and Everett Cunningham, mortician, said It was evident that Mr. Holmes waited until the engine passed and then threw himself under the wheels of the train. The body was completely severed. Mr. Holmes attempted suicide by clashing his wrists and throat on May 9, city police reported, but had apparently recovered and was working as usual last week. He had been in ill health about a year, members of the family said. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ernestine Holmes, and the following children: Robert, Ralph and Keith, all at home; Mrs. John Alcorn of Charleston, Mrs. Donald Schaffer of Morgantown, and Bill Holmes of Santiago, Calif; eight sisters, Mrs. Clint Litton and Mrs. Levi Litton of Charleston; Mrs. O. A. Wiblin and Mrs. D. B. Wiblin of North Charleston; Mrs. John McCown of Spencer, Mrs. E. B. Wade of St. Albans; Mrs. Charles Blackshire of Dunbar and Mrs. Hazel Bolies of Charleston, and two brothers, John of Cincinnati and James of North Carolina. The body is at the Bartlett mortuary. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mr. Holmes was a member of the Weekley Memorial United Brethren church and of the local painters' union 970. on May 30, 1948.5

Funeral services will be conducted at Kellysville Church of God at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. George S Kelly and the Rev. Larry Lykens officiating. Burial will follow in Oakvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Buddy Whitlow, James Whitlow, Houston Whitlow, Benny Whitlow, Dean Whitlow and Jay Whitlow. on March 3, 1981.3

Arite Whitlow of Anderson, S.C; and several neices and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kellysville Church of God with Rev. Larry Lykens and Rev. Frank Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Oakvale Cemetery. Pallbearers: James Whitlow, Benny Whitlow, Oakie Whitlow, Buddy Whitlow, Houston Whitlow and James Turner. on May 8, 1981.3

     Melba R. Otta was buried at Quincy Memorial Park, Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois.1 She Melba R. Otto Dulaney, 99, 418 Washington, formerly of 3633 Orchard Rd, Quincy, died Monday, September 20, 2010 at 9:26 p.m. at Sunset home. She was born December 25, 1910 in Pollock, Missouri, the daughter of Pearl Davis and Hazel Dwyer Otto. They moved to Quincy when she was about 2 years old. On June 6, 1937, she married Douglas A. Dulaney in Quincy, IL. He died December 30, 1999. Mrs. Dulaney was a member of the First Christian Church from the time she was a little girl, when the church was located at 9th and Broadway. She taught Sunday School there and was a member of the Carley Sunday School class, where she met Doug, her husband. She also was very involved in the Christian Women's Fellowship at the church. Mrs. Dulaney was a graduate of Quincy High School and Gem City Business College. She was very active with her QHS Alumni class of 1929. They diligently sent a Christmas letter to all classmates to keep in touch. Their last reunion was their 70th , held in 1999. After graduating from Gem City Business College, she worked at Beatrice Creamery and then in the office of Halbach Shroeder department store until her marriage in 1937. She became a life member of the PTA after serving on the PTA's of Ellington School, Quincy Junior High School, and Quincy High School. She was a charter member of The Great River Watercolor Society, often memorializing her travels and life in her paintings. She also was involved in the Adams County Home Bureau and was a 4H leader. Mr. and Mrs. Dulaney shared an interest in traveling and were former members of the Quincy Area Trailer Club. She was also a member of the Women's City Club, where she played cards for many years. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Bennett and her husband Don of Quincy; 3 sons, Steve Dulaney and his wife Janet of Larkspur, CO, Kent Dulaney and his wife Maxine of Algonquin, IL, Dave Dulaney of Quincy, and a daughter in law, Sue Dulaney of Maywood, MO; 9 grandchildren, Curt Bennett and his wife Stephanie of Quincy, Debbie Ernst and her husband John of Quincy, Kathy Oakley and her husband Hal of Quincy, Julie Southwick and her husband Jim of Union, KY, Scott Dulaney and his wife Cindy of Castle Rock, CO, Billy Joe Patterson of Mesa, AZ, Michael Dulaney of Bethesda, MD, Rick Dulaney of Schaumburg, IL, and Christine Dulaney of Seattle, WA; 10 great-grandchildren, Christopher Bennett, Dulaney Bennett, Alexandria Ernst, Olivia Ernst, Erica Ernst, Ben Oakley, Abigail Oakley, Allen Oakley, all of Quincy, Kaitlyn Southwick of Union, KY, and Wyatt Patterson of Mesa, AZ. She also is survived by a sister in law, Shirley Otto of Springfield, IL and a nephew, Bob Otto and his wife Carol of Lago Vista, TX.
